Teens invited to book club Book Club for Teens welcomes readers in grades seven through nine to meet from 4 to 5 p.m. at Franklin Lakes Public Library on the last Wednesday of each month. There are no assigned books. Participants are invited to attend to talk about whatever they are reading. Snacks are always provided, and no registration is necessary. Teens who cannot attend the meeting are welcome to join in the discussion at http://katethelibrarian. blogspot.com. Help for the college-bound On Monday, Sept. 27, Joshua Marber, MS.Ed., will return to Franklin Lakes Library at 6:30 p.m. to advise teens and their families about the overall college decision-making and admission processes. “Choosing the Right College” will address when students should begin their search and college visits, how to fill out applications and write essays, and advice about the SATs and ACTs. Marber will also discuss how students can get the most financial aid, scholarships, and grants. Marber has over 10 years of experience in the education, counseling, and college fields. Learn to dress your windows On Sept. 23, interior designer MariaElena Grant will present “How to Dress a Naked Window” at the Franklin Lakes Public Library at 470 DeKorte Drive. This 7 p.m. seminar will provide ideas for oversized and specialty-shaped windows, and will cover the latest styles and colors for window treatments. All are welcome to attend. Sukkot dinner, celebration planned The Chabad Jewish Center will host a Sukkot Holiday dinner, held outdoors in the Sukkah on Friday, Sept. 24. In addition to the four-course catered meal, there will be an interactive community game, and a children’s program. RSVP by Sept. 20 to (201) 848-0449. The cost is $25 per adult, $15 per child, and $180 per sponsor. Instead of partying at the Synagogue Sukkah, Chabad of NW Bergen County has taken the party mobile this holiday with a Sukkah on wheels. The mobile Sukkah will visit homes in the Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes area on Sept. 26 and 27 ready with a nosh and an activity for a 20-minute party. Reservations are necessary. To host your own Sukkah party, simply invite some friends and call Chabad to reserve a time-slot. There is no charge for the visit, but residents are requested to guarantee 10 people for the party. The eight-day, Jewish holiday of Sukkot is an annual celebration in the fall season which commemorates the harvest and the Biblical sojourn in the Sinai desert. Holiday
traditions center on a leaf-covered outdoor hut called a “Sukkah,” where families eat their meals and spend their leisure time. To reserve a party, call Rabbi Kaplan at (201) 848-0449. To learn more about Sukkot, visit www.chabadplace.org. Town Fair coming up The 2010 Franklin Lakes Town Fair has been set for Saturday, Sept. 25. (Rain date: Sunday, Sept. 26). Vendor booths will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the carnival rides and food booths will be open until 8 p.m. All Franklin Lakes businesses, members of the Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce, residents, and Franklin Lakes based non-profit organizations are welcome to participate. Republican Club sets session The Franklin Lakes Republican Club will meet Sept. 20 at 7:45 p.m. at the Bender Court Ambulance Corps building. All are invited to attend. The club meets on the third Monday of the month. The club will be hosting mayoral candidate Frank Bivona and council candidates Nathalie Lota and Frank Pedone, who will discuss their vision for the town. Those who attend will also have an opportunity to learn about key council programs to reduce expenses and restore financial stability. The Franklin Lakes Republican Club is a non-profit organization established to represent the Republican Party in town. Circus comes to town The Franklin Lakes Lions Club will host the Zerbini Circus Sept. 19 at McBride Field on Franklin Lake Road. There will be shows at 1, 3, and 5 p.m. The circus will be under the big red and white stripped tent and will have a wide assortment of acts. Tickets are $9 in advance and $11 at the door on the day of the circus. Children under two years old will be admitted free. Advance ticket purchase is recommended as some shows sell out. Tickets can be purchased at Cartridge World, 830 Franklin Avenue; Stop and Shop, 816 Franklin Avenue; and TD Bank at Urban Farms Shopping Center. Call (201) 891-3431. Fall ESL classes available Free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and an ESL Bible Study will be available to the public at The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes, 730 Franklin Lake Road, beginning Sept. 15.
