Midland Park September 8, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Grant provides barrier-free doors for DePhillips Center The DePhillips Community Center in Midland Park will receive new ramps and doors to make the facility totally accessible to the handicapped. The municipality was recently awarded a block grant in the amount of $40,000 from the Bergen County Community Development program for the project. The borough will add $22,500 from its own capital improvement fund to make up the shortfall for the estimated project cost of $62,500. “We’ll bid it out and hopefully, in this economy, we’ll get a good price. If it comes in too high, we’d have to scale it down, or do it in stages, or not do it at all,” said Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan. The project includes the installation of two handicapped-accessible doors at opposite ends of the building. One of the doors will be installed at ground level to provide access to the elevator. The elevator was purchased last year with a Community Development grant of $92,431, but the amount was not sufficient to cover the costs of the ramp and the doors. The elevator shaft had been constructed as part of the renovation of the DePhillips Center in 2008. The other door will be installed at the side entrance to the building, which accesses the second floor gym at the end of a cement ramp. The door also serves as a second-floor emergency exit to the building for persons who are physically challenged. Previous projects done with Community Development funds, all to conform to Americans with Disabilities Act mandates, include new bathrooms at the library, town hall, the field house at the recreation field and the DPW building; the playground at Wortendyke Park; election poll upgrades, and entrance ramps at the library and town hall. Dugan said that the borough engineer would now prepare the specifications, with an anticipated completion date for the project of early spring. Zoning map up for approval An ordinance to officially adopt Midland Park’s zoning map will have a public hearing at the mayor and council meeting of Sept. 23. The ordinance was introduced at the last council meeting. The map is virtually unchanged from the previous map developed as part of the 1999 master plan. The new map shows updates made as a result of zone changes, such as the addition of the attached single-family dwelling zone in Wortendyke.
