Hitler smiled at the naiveté of a younger man from a younger country: “Howard, you’ll find that every man has his price – and in most cases you’ll be amazed at how cheap it is,” Hitler answered. The price was jobs: Bureaucratic jobs were political plums in Germany in the 1930s. When “Aryans” saw Jews being kicked out of their jobs at the universities and in the hospitals – World War I veterans got to stay in the civil service as a dying bequest from President Paul von Hindenberg, who despised Hitler -- very few “Aryans” objected. The secret of Hitler’s Jewish ancestry went public in 1930, when Hans Frank Hitler’s personal lawyer had to deal with a blackmail attempt by William Patrick Hitler, the future dictator’s nephew. William Patrick Hitler, who was half Irish and whose children later became American citizens, wanted money to hush up the knowledge that the great Aryan purifier was one-quarter Jewish. The money wasn’t forthcoming, so William Patrick took the story to “Look” magazine. It was hushed up in Germany, especially after Hitler seized power in 1933, but many people in the German-American and Jewish communities knew about it, at least as a persistent rumor. In 1940, Charlie Chaplin starred as “Adenoid Hynckel” in “The Great Dictator,” playing both the ranting dictator with a tiny moustache and a timid Jewish barber who is knocked out during World War I, suffers amnesia, and returns to consciousness to be mistaken for the antiSemitic dictator. Hitler loved American movies, especially “King Kong” and “The Grapes of Wrath,” but he hated “The Great Dictator” – and not just because it was the first Hollywood film to openly name the Jews as Hitler’s primary victims. People who desperately needed to portray Hitler as a believing Catholic and a full-blooded Aryan claimed that Hans Frank made the whole thing up while facing execution. Hans Frank, who walked to the gallows after the Nuremberg trials in 1946, after being convicted of crimes against both Jews and Poles, never repudiated the stories. Frank had converted back to Catholicism after the murders of thousands of Poles and the tangential murders of millions of Jews. His American executioner said that, after Frank converted back to Roman Catholicism he went to the gallows as a form of expiation. Patrick William Hitler, who served honorably as a U.S. Navy medic in World War II and was wounded in combat, never repudiated the stories either. This DNA story is very bad news for two groups. There actually are some people out there who see Hitler as having been a sort of hero who tried to stem the tide of “Jewish Marxism” or some deeper Rothschild conspiracy. This is bogus. Hitler was a treacherous coward who ran out on his own followers at the Munich Beer Hall Putsch in November 1923. In June 1934, he murdered those of his most loyal adherents whose militant socialism or open homosexuality made them unacceptable to the conservative politicians and businessmen who still ran Germany. He used sexual slander to destroy those Prussian professionals who told him that Germany wasn’t ready for war, and used the assassination of a German diplomat by a Jewish teenager in November 1938 to launch a murderous wave of mob attacks on Jews and to confiscate their remaining property. Hitler was not a protector of “Aryans,” still less of Christians. He was a neo-pagan who took care only of himself and left Germany and the Germans much worse off than when he found them. The second group to be offended consists of those who see Hitler’s murderous anti-Semitism to be uniquely German with deep roots in Christianity or tribal Aryan genetics. Wrong twice. Hitler hated Christianity almost as much as he hated Judaism. He once said, “The heaviest blow which ever struck humanity was Christianity: Bolshevism is Christianity’s illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jews.” Prussia had been tolerant of Jews for at least two centuries before Hitler. A census conducted by Quartermaster General Erich Ludendorff found that 117,000 Jews had served in the German Army in World War I, and that they had been killed, wounded, decorated, and promoted at the same proportionate level as Protestants or Catholics. Anne Frank’s father was a German officer in World War I. So was Hugo Gutmann – Hitler’s own company commander in World War I and the man who legitimatized Hitler by recommending Hitler for the Iron Cross, first class. Lothar Machtan, a contemporary German historian, a few years ago made a strong circumstantial case for the idea that Hitler was a homosexual who awarded soft jobs to some of his lovers and murdered those like Ernst Roehm who didn’t know when to shut up. About 50,000 Germans were ultimately executed for their opposition to the Hitler regime. The officers involved in the assassination attempts were mostly devout Catholics. James Helmut von Moltke, an advocate of Hitler’s overthrow, was a Christian Scientist. Concentration camp inmates Martin Niemoller and Dietrich Bonhoeffer were Lutheran pastors. Hans and Sophie Scholl, executed as anti-Nazi students, were active Lutherans. The Nazi movement was profoundly antiChristian, and most of the anti-Nazi movement was profoundly Christian. Hitler’s DNA doesn’t explain his evil as genetic. The nature of his evil was psychological. He rejected Catholicism for a mixture of Darwinism and the occult. Hitler is no longer available as a hero for contemporary anti-Semites, nor as a bugbear as a “traditional German anti-Semite” in what had been a tolerant country. He knew about his Jewish genes and invented the hate as he went along. He was uniquely monstrous. Let’s dismiss Darwin, stamp out child abuse, and hope we never see Hitler’s like again. His evil was real, but it wasn’t genetic. Once again, DNA testing forces a re-examination of history in a way that some people will regard as a nightmare: Adolf Hitler, the worst anti-Semite in history and the third worst murderer in history after Stalin and Mao, was of partial Jewish ancestry. This story has been kicking around for 80 years, but a DNA test recently clinched it. Two Belgians, a journalist and a historian, roamed Europe and the United States collecting saliva from 39 of Hitler’s blood relatives and report a chromosome called Haplogroup E1B1B1 in all the Hitler relatives. “Haplogroup E1B1B1 is rare in Germany and in the rest of northern Europe. The chromosome is most commonly found in the Berbers of North Africa, Libya, and Tunisia, as well as among Askenazi and Sephardic Jews,” said Marc Vermeeren, the historian who tracked down some of the Hitler relatives, at least one of them an American citizen. The prevalence of the Haplogroup among the Berbers led at least some Americans to assume that Hitler was of African and Jewish ancestry. Nope. Berbers are darkhaired whites with classic European features and had no significant contact with central Europeans before the 19th century. Their chances of having contributed to Hitler’s gene pool are almost nil. Haplogroup E1B1B1, however, is found in 18 to 20 percent of Ashkenazi Jews (long-term residents of Germany) and 8.6 percent to 30 percent of Sephardic Jews – those who lived in the Middle East. The Ashkenazi group is the one from which the Hitler contact undoubtedly occurred. The story has been around since the 1930s. Hitler’s “Aryan” ancestors were far from being Norse-Germanic heroes from the “Volsung Saga” or the “Nibelunglied.” One of them, Anna Maria Schickelgruber, age 44, a household servant, got pregnant through a liaison with a 19-yearold kid from the Jewish family of Leopold Frankenberger, her employer. This happened in Austria-Hungary rather than in Germany, and in Austria-Hungary at this point in history, Jewish professionals had to step off the sidewalk and into the street if a Catholic teenager told them to. Like her grandson, Schickelgruber appears to have made a profit out of anti-Semitism. The Frankenberger family paid the requisite blackmail to keep Schickelgruber quiet. Intelligence, for perhaps the first time, entered the Schickelgruber line. Schickelgruber used her “dowry” to marry a tramp named Hiedler – later Hitler – and the cover story that the future dictator was a full-blooded “Aryan” locked in. Robert Payne, a working-class Englishman who was once married to a Chinese woman in Shanghai and immunized against Darwinian racial theory, once met and spoke to Hitler. He was staggered by the impression of Hitler’s twisted but immense intelligence. So was Howard K. Smith, an American journalist. Both men, Payne in particular, had qualms about accepting Hitler’s racial theories. But neither dismissed him as a dim-witted USA KKK fanatic of the same era. Through an interpreter, Smith asked Hitler how he had been able to subvert the best-educated people in Europe The Hitler Haplogroup Letters to the Editor Dear Editor: In response to Sept. 1 article related to the designation of the borough engineer for Midland Park, I offer the following clarification: First and foremost, I continue to encourage the public and journalists to attend the public meetings of Midland Park’s governing body on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. To that end, they will have the opportunity to hear the full breadth and unbiased view of the entire governing body. More specifically, I feel compelled to clarify the mischaracterization by one individual quoted in the article whereby it was cited that the mid-year designation of Stantec Engineering as the borough engineer was an “oversight on the part of the council.” This was no “oversight.” Quite the opposite; it was an appropriate, prudent and conscious decision, as the consensus of the entire governing body earlier this year, to see how ongoing projects progressed prior to committing to one firm before we absolutely had to. Furthermore, our logic, as more properly stated later in the article by another governing body member as, “We just wanted to do our due diligence for the future, to check what is available from other providers,” was true and accurate. Thus, come mid-year, we had to make the call and did so: that is, continue with Stantec for the remainder of 2010, plain and simple. Mayor offers clarification At the risk of sounding defensive, I continue to encourage all to participate in the public meetings in order to hear an entirety of each issue or situation and not continue to rely on the limited view of one or few as expressed in the press. The borough has, on the whole, a very balanced and responsible governing body. Let’s report on a more holistic level and not on the continued basis of a few. I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming meetings and wish the community a happy and safe closure to this year’s summer vacation season.
