Asian long-horned beetles have most recently been discovered at Faulkner Hospital in Boston, just across the street from the Arnold Arboretum. Beetles have been intercepted in American seaports and have been discovered attacking trees in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Adult beetles are up to an inch and a quarter long with a jet black body and mottled white spots on the back. The antennae, or “horns,” are much longer than the beetle’s body and have bands on the segments. The Wyckoff Shade Tree Commission has warned

eventually can girdle the trees, killing them. Once beetles are detected, the infected trees must be cut down and chipped or burned. Quarantines are also established to prevent the beetles from spreading from infected tree fragments to non-infested trees. Wyckoff residents are urged to fight the spread of the Asian long-horned beetles by leaving their firewood at home and not transporting it to campgrounds or parks, using only firewood from local sources, burning all firewood at campground fireplaces and not leaving any, and not bringing firewood home from out of state.
