What has always impressed Wyckoff’s Caroline McCormack about sewing teacher Virginia Fawcett is her sweet and kindhearted encouragement of the students at the Needlecraft School in Midland Park. McCormack believes Fawcett should be honored for her work with young people, and is proposing that a postage stamp be issued by the U.S. Postal Service in her honor. McCormack notes that Fawcett urges her students to make beautiful clothing – and a difference in the world. Fawcett’s Patriotic Pillows have made a big impact on both the sewing students and American soldiers abroad. Needlecraft students have been sewing pillows for soldiers in Iraq

and Kuwait ever since Fawcett learned the soldiers often slept on piles of clothing at night. She has sent over 10,000 pillows to the soldiers and has received many heartwarming letters of thanks in return. The walls of her Midland Park shop are decorated with certificates, awards, and letters she received. “Mrs. Fawcett has helped students pursue their dreams of sewing with her kind and enthusiastic encouragement. We are very lucky to have her,” McCormack said. Commenting on her proposal for a postage stamp, the young student said, “Mrs. Fawcett would…symbolize sewing and encourage people to try it. Her shop would get more business and she deserves to be honored in a way where everyone will know her and the work she does. She has helped the armed forces and made a significant change in New Jersey. Mrs. Fawcett is an extraordinary and wonderful person. Virginia Fawcett is my hero and definitely deserves to be on a stamp!” The Midland Park Post Office has been flying a flag that U.S. Marines in Afghanistan presented to Fawcett in thanks for her pillows. The flag was recently raised during a special ceremony.
