September 1, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Midland Park Engineering firm rehired; will serve through December A borough engineer is now on board in Midland Park. At its last meeting, the borough council officially hired Stantec Consulting of Rochelle Park. The firm will serve until Dec. 31. 2010. Without an engineer, the borough was unable to proceed with several projects for which grant monies had been awarded. At a previous meeting, Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan noted that the borough could not apply for new grants because the ones already awarded had not been implemented. “It was an oversight on the part of the council. Stantec has put in a lot of effort this year when they were not obligated to do so. They deserve to be reappointed,” said Council President Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan. “We have no major projects coming up, so there was no urgency,” he added. Stantec Consulting has served as the borough engineer for several years, but the firm was not reappointed along with the other borough professionals during the reorganization meeting in January. At that time council members said that, while they were not dissatisfied with Stantec, they wanted to interview other firms. That process will take place at the end of this year, O’Hagan said. “No one is dissatisfied with Stantec’s work. They do a good job. We just wanted to do our due diligence for the future, to check what is available from other providers,” said Councilman Nick Papapietro. The firm will now work on the requirements for the Community Development grants, including barrier-free sidewalk ramps and ADA doors and ramps for the DePhillips Center. Stantec did the engineering work for two projects inching forward: the sewer connection to the Ridgewood line and the drainage improvements at Hill Street/Cyphers Lane. since 1978 LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, INC. Borough residents invited to Community Day Midland Park will celebrate its Tenth Annual Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, Sept. 12) at the DePhillips Community Center at 50 Dairy Street. According to Recreation Director Lori Dent, the event’s organizer, this year’s celebration has taken on a luau theme. “Dig out your beach attire and come dressed to win the Beach Party Costume Contest,” Dent invited.
