Ackaway Mathilda Hymen Letters to the Editor (continued from page 18) Therefore, Wyckoff residents have a lot more than 85,000 books at their disposal. Now, more than ever, we need to use this benefit of shared resources. No doubt we all drive past other libraries every day. We can stop in, get a book, and then return it at any library in the county. There is no need for an expansion of the Wyckoff Library. An elevator, if needed, sure. Repairs? Sure. Millions of dollars to shelve more books in the era of e-readers and shared libraries is, quite frankly, self serving and very, very wasteful. I wonder how the rest of the citizens of Wyckoff would vote if this issue were on a referendum. Andrea Mateo Wyckoff Dear Editor: I’m a Republican and I will always be a Republican, but I’m starting to wonder if democracy isn’t being circumvented in Franklin Lakes by having one party always in control without any checks and balances. When one party usurps all the power, you have abuse. I found this to be true in Franklin Lakes when I moved here. I was building an addition in 1991 and received a notice of nine fake violations from a vindictive zoning official. The local government would not even listen to me, a widow with no political connections. I had so little clout that I couldn’t even get the borough attorney to honor the Freedom of Information Act and was denied right to know information openly by Bill Smith at a taped council meeting. This would not have happened if we had some checks and balances on our council. The old administration is gone, older residents have moved out, and new people have moved in. It is important that they know what the town went through in the past to avoid a repeat of it. We cannot allow individuals, particularly those from that period, to bring their own personal agenda to the office. We finally managed to elect a decent female mayor who was doing a lot of good for the town, but because she did not reappoint Bill Smith as borough attorney, he has worked against her ever since. He got on council and has given her such a bad time, he succeeded in driving her out. I watched him harass her at several council meetings while the council sat by in silent consent. In other words, he seems to have control of the council. Now he has allied himself with the (person who will be the) new mayor, and if we sit back and allow this takeover, we will find ourselves in the same bad situation that there was in the past. We don’t want anyone to resume the old fiefdom with the new mayor, or use the new mayor as a stepping stone to set up the old fiefdom down the road with himself as mayor. I intend to vote straight Republican next month in everything except the council, where I will vote Democratic. It is to our advantage to add other voices to the council to have true democracy and to protect ourselves against abuse of power. Lucille Joyner Franklin Lakes John H. Ball Jeffrey R.
