Jeremy Vuolo
Syracuse Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo, grandson of long-time Midland Park resident Tony Vuolo, has been named one of 10 finalists nationwide for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s soccer. This award will be presented to an NCAA Division I men’s senior soccer player who is considered a complete student-athlete. The winner will be chosen through a combination of votes from fans and votes from media representatives and coaches. Fan voting is now underway and will continue through Nov. 14 at www.seniorCLASSaward.com. The winner will be named at the 2010 NCAA College Cup in December. Candidates for this award were selected based on their on-the-field performance, personal character, and achievements in the classroom and within the community. A media committee selected the finalists from a list of 30 candidates who were announced in August. Vuolo transferred to Syracuse from Hartwick College for his senior season. He has started 61 of the 62 games he has played in his career, which includes 250 saves and 19 shutouts. Through nine games this season, Vuolo leads the Big East in saves with 46, and posted one shutout. A 2010 Orange captain, Vuolo was named to the Big East Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll in September for his performances against Cornell and Pittsburgh. He totaled 18 saves in the those contests to help the Orange to a 1-1 draw against the Big Red and a 0-0 stalemate against the Panthers. While at Hartwick, Vuolo formed the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes subdivision. Under his direction, the group organized several community service events, including the first annual “Hartwick Hill Race” to benefit the Family Resource Network. The event raised more than $3,500 to assist special needs children. Vuolo is currently enrolled in the MBA program in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. CLASS stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The program was launched during 2001-02 in response to the trend of college basketball players who were leaving college early to turn professional.
