Shotmeyer
(continued from page 8) His love for the great outdoors began in the Boys Brigade program at Hawthorne Gospel Church. This national program encompasses camping and outdoor life while maintaining a strong spiritual emphasis. Shotmeyer has held just about every position in Troop 77, including two separate terms as senior patrol leader. He currently serves as patrol leader for the troop’s venture patrol and as the Order of the Arrow representative. He holds over 30 merit badges, and is certified in CPR, Red Cross First Aid, Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense, Leave No Trace, and as a BSA Life Guard. He also attended the Boy Scouts’ National Youth Leadership Training. He was subsequently named to the program’s staff and taught the program for the next two summers. He was the first member of Troop 77 to be selected and participate in the Youth Staff Development Course, an advanced leadership training program for Boy Scouts throughout Northeast Region. Shotmeyer has become very active in the BSA’s National Honor Society, The Order of the Arrow. He is a Brotherhood member of the Lenapehoking Lodge IX, serves on the executive board, and is the ceremony chairman. Last summer, he traveled to Indiana University Arrowmen to participate in the National Order of the Arrow Conference and to compete as Chief Allowat Sakima on the lodge’s ceremony team. He was a part of the first Troop 77 Patrol of Scouts to attend Floodwood High Adventure camp in the Adirondacks. For one rigorous week, he canoed, set camp on various islands, portaged canoes, and hiked mountains, covering a total of 50 miles. He learned to Leave no Trace, clean his teeth with charcoal, and survive on scant food. He enjoyed it so much that he was instrumental in drafting plans for the second trip the following summer.
