Needlecraft Sewing Center teaches skills, confidence
or more than three decades, students of all ages have been honing their sewing skills at the Needlecraft School, where owner Ginny Fawcett shows individuals and groups how to create their own clothing, accessories, and home decor. The highlight of the afterschool class is the annual fashion show at Midland Park High School. Students model their designs, building confidence in the process. After learning that American soldiers abroad often slept on piles of clothing at night, Ginny rallied her students to sew Patriotic Pillows. This successful effort, which has seen over 10,000 pillows shipped to American service men and women, has won Ginny heartwarming thank you letters, an appearance on national television, awards, certificates, a flag, and a citation. Fawcett was also honGinny Fawcett ored at the national convention of the Texas Roadhouse restaurant, receiving a substantial donation from the national chain. Those funds have already been depleted, and Fawcett always welcomes donations of funds or products to her Pillow Project. Recently, adult enrollment has been growing as budget-conscious individuals learn the basics or refresh their skills as a springboard for making drapes and pillows. Instruction in sewing, dressmaking, and tailoring is also offered. Ginny keeps up to date with the latest styles and techniques. She recommends flattering attire for every body type and makes suggestions for wardrobe-stretching accents. When she teaches youngsters, Ginny includes a healthy dose of manners. Classes are offered for children from three years old to teens. Ginny also works with local Scouts to complete their sewing badges. Scouts leave with an item they have made and the skill to try something similar on their own. The Needlecraft School is located at 216-A Godwin Avenue in Midland Park. Call (201) 444-2976 for class schedules and information about individual instruction, which can begin at any time.
Maureen Wuerfel is proud owner of Gingerbread Shop
F
Consignment Shop in Midland Park after having worked there for 15 years. “The former owners were closing it, and I thought it was worth it to keep providing the service to the community,” she explains. “The regulars encouraged me, because they didn’t want to lose it.” The shop’s ambiance is bright and relaxed. Wuerfel refurbished the storefront as soon as she took it over and says she likes everything Maureen Wuerfel about her venture, even the longer hours. “I very much enjoy the shop, the customers, helping people. The regulars have become friends,” she says. The Gingerbread Shop carries new and gently used quality clothing for women and children, including designer fashions. The stock comes from area residents whom the clothes no longer fit, or who received them as gifts and they didn’t suit their taste, or whose children outgrew them. Due to the shop’s reputation for quality merchandise at a very good price, consignees as well as shoppers come from as far away as New York City, Parsippany and Morris County. People may also bring in items on consignment and donate their share of the proceeds to a program for adults with autism in Paramus. The choice of beneficiary is no coincidence. Wuerfel has been an active advocate for autistic programs for over 20 years. One of her three children is autistic, and she is well aware of the need for funding to support specialized programs. The Gingerbread Consignment Shop is located at 228 Godwin Ave. in Midland Park. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30ish until 5ish. Stop by and surprise yourself with a great find.
