Wyckoff Police Detective Michael Musto said he had to go to a second box due to the volume of medications collected at police headquarters last week through Operation Take Back New Jersey. The event was held in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bergen County Prosecutors Office. Sixty-four residents came out to drop off the surplus contents of their medicine cabinets. “It was all anonymous,” Detective Musto said. He said that many residents had not wanted to flush the drugs down the toilet for fear of contaminating the ground water. “I didn’t expect to see so much relief on people’s faces to get rid of the stuff,” Musto said. “They were incredibly relieved to get this stuff out of the house.” The drugs were taken to the Bergen County Police Academy the following day, where local officers reported a truckload of unwanted and potentially dangerous drugs from Bergen County had been turned in. The program was rated a great success. J. KOSTER Detecitve Michael Musto (left) and some of the prescription drugs collected in last week’s effort.
