Midland Park October 6, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 LED blinking stop signs will soon be installed in Midland Park at the two accident-prone intersections: Franklin and Vreeland and Franklin and Erie avenues. The borough council at its last meeting approved the purchase of four solar-powered signs at a cost of $6,200. They will be installed by Department of Public Works employees. The funds will come from the Franklin Avenue repaving budget. “They are quite impressive,” commented Police Chief John Casson, who checked out similar signs installed at a Paterson intersection. “If they don’t get people’s attention, nothing will.” Casson said that while the number of accidents is not that numerous, there are more accidents at those intersections than there are at the streets’ intersection with Godwin Avenue. He also said that though the accidents are not that serious, they are LED stop signs eyed Local artist to exhibit paintings always “good hits with damage and injuries.” Most of the occurrences involve out of town drivers who may be unfamiliar with the corners, which are near bends in the roadway which affect visibility. Nancy Bardman of Franklin Avenue, who lives three houses away from the Vreeland corner, has asked the council on several occasions to look into the safety issue there. She has suggested installing regular traffic signals to replace the blinkers, reducing the speed limit of the busy connector roadways and additional radar checks. She even volunteered her driveway to conceal the patrol car. The proposed warning signs use LED technology to illuminate the border of the hexagonal stop sign in an ultra-bright flashing mode.
