A number of Volunteer Fire Department officers, including Fire Chief David Murphy, attended the meeting in uniform, to watch Wyckoff Municipal Clerk Joyce Santimauro administer the oath. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of 100 volunteers, each of whom has received 140 hours of basic firematic training at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. The firefighters continue their training every Monday evening in Wyckoff. Volunteers learn such skills as search, fire suppression, fire attack, fire ground communications, and advanced vehicle rescue techniques. Wyckoff’s high-morale volunteer department is of the very few departments in New Jersey to conduct an annual competitive inspection in which outside professional firefighters and senior volunteers from other departments evaluate the three engine companies and select one of the companies as the winner. The firefighters then recess to an awards dinner, where awards for longevity in five-year increments and certificates of competence in skills newly learned are awarded. DWI crackdown to begin December 6 The new firefighters being sworn in. by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee welcomed nine new firefighters to the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department and saw eight of them take their oaths at last week’s public meeting. Dieter Perske was accepted to Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Company #1. Perske’s mem- bership application for the New Jersey State Firemen Association was approved by resolution at the same meeting. Robert Kehoe, George Kranich, E.J. Lawler, and Raphael Garcia were accepted to Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Company #2. Garcia had a work commitment and was unable to attend the ceremony, but will take the oath at a future date. On Dec. 6, the Wyckoff Police Department will join police officers around the state in a month-long crackdown on impaired drivers. The effort will feature sobriety checkpoints. Last year, 185 people were killed in New Jersey as a result of alcohol-related crashes, representing 31 percent of the 583 fatalities reported in the state in 2009. “This is a critical law enforcement program that can save lives during a time of the year when impaired driving traditionally increases by nearly 10 percent,” Fox said. “This initiative brings attention to the serious consequences of drunk driving and the grave danger those who choose to drink and drive pose to all who share the road with them.” The Wyckoff Township Committee approved the police initiative by resolution at last week’s township committee meeting. Over the Labor Day weekend, a crackdown on speeders and impaired drivers led to a number of arrests for both speeding and DWI, along with other moving violations and vehicle maintenance issues. The Labor Day effort was funded by $4,000 from the State of New Jersey. The township committee applied for another $4,500 at a prior meeting. J.
