Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • November 17, 2010 Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? A very special “hat’s off” goes to Gerry Gilmore at Wyckoff Auto and Tom Claire, a generous Wyckoff resident, for helping Emily’s dad with four new tires! We know they are truly grateful! We thank Tracy Zysman, a Daisy Scout and Cub Scout leader, who brought Daisy Scout Troop 94286 and Cub Pack 88 Den Number 5 for a visit. The Scouts came in to tour our facility and brought lots of goodies for our food pantry. The children learned about what we do and helped us put away their donations. Thank you so much! It’s never too early to learn about community service. We thank Homestead Roofing, Ridgewood; Books, Bytes, and Beyond, Glen Rock; The Running Company, Ridgewood; Yansi Fugel, Ridgewood; It’s Greek to Me, Ridgewood; Clearview Cinema, Ridgewood; In the Swing, Waldwick; The Superdome, Waldwick; Rita’s Snips for Pips, Ridgewood; Service Master, Midland Park, Cupcakes by Carousel, Ridgewood; Indian Trail Club, Franklin Lakes; and A. Mano, Ridgewood for their support of our upcoming fundraiser, A Hollywood Bash. Come celebrate with us! Set for Jan. 8, A Hollywood Bash will be our biggest fundraiser ever. The event will be held at the Woman’s Club of Ridgewood, and will feature a live band, food and drinks, an auction, and other surprises. Come and get treated like a star! We can use your help. Can your company, store, or restaurant donate something toward our event? How about dinner for two or a manicure/pedicure? Do you own 4-29-09 karen/janine EmmanuelHelp2x.75(4-29-09) 3 x .75 season tickets? Are you computer savvy? Can you help us put a program together? Proceeds from this event will be used to assist our Northern Region families caring for children with cancer. To volunteer or donate an item, call Laura Savage at (201) 612-8118 or e-mail: laura@emmanuelcancer.org. This family needs help: Anthony was your typical fiveyear-old who was very rambunctious and loved playing outside. That is, until May when he was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a rare cancer of the kidneys that primarily effects children. Anthony had to have his kidney removed and received chemotherapy. The doctors advised the family that, although Anthony’s prognosis was very good, he cannot play contact sports or participate in activities that could injure him. Anthony will soon receive his last chemotherapy treatment, and recently enjoyed seeing all of his friends at school again. Even after all he has been through, Anthony has adjusted well to his new restrictions and limitations. He wants to begin taking guitar lessons, and loves to watch “Star Wars” movies. Please help us to continue to support Anthony and his family by contributing to ECF’s family services program. We want to make sure to be there for Anthony, and we can only do that with your help. Help a Family for the Holidays: We are looking for Santa Drivers. We need drivers to deliver holiday gifts to our families. Locations include: Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. Please volunteer to spend a few hours dropping off some holiday gifts. You will need proof of a current background check, or we can help you get one. You can help in a variety of ways. Turn your next event into a fundraiser by accepting checks or gift cards to be donated to ECF, or donate your restaurant or business for a few hours to host a fundraiser of your choice. Your efforts will help us to help families like Andy’s in many ways, including sending a caseworker to visit the families at their home or in the hospital. This support for the kids, their siblings, and their parents is crucial. Get your kids involved. Some kids host sales and donate the proceeds to ECF. Is your Cub Scout or Girl Scout Troop looking to earn badges? This is a great way. Get creative and have fun while learning about philanthropy. Your food donations and grocery store gift cards also help to support ECF’s food pantry. We rely on our local community to help support our families. Many of them do not have the financial or emotional support to help them get through a major illness like cancer. Please remember: We do not charge anything for our services. We rely on you! We are also happy to come speak at your fundraiser or event and talk about our programs. If you have a few hours a week to spare, consider becoming a volunteer, or just stop by and meet with us, take a look at our pantry, and see what ECF is all about. Volunteers are welcome to assist on Monday from 10 to 1, Wednesday from 1 to 5, and all day on Friday. Call (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Please visit us on the web at: www.emmanuelcancer.org. As always, thank you for helping the children and their families! Improvement (continued from page 5) need of improvement. “Our district is committed to addressing the issues that caused our school to miss AYP,” Schoen emphasized. She asked for the parents’ support and input as the district works to successfully achieve its student performance goals. “As a parent, you are encouraged to contact your child’s school principal to provide input and see how you can become involved in helping the school address its achievement issues,” Schoen told the parents. Some other schools in surrounding school districts were also identified as schools in need of improvement for their students with disabilities. The Valley Middle School in Oakland did not make its AYP benchmark target in language arts literacy or math, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School in Wyckoff did not meet its AYP benchmark target in language arts literacy or math, the Ramapo Ridge Middle School in Mahwah failed to make its AYP benchmark in language arts literacy, and the Joyce Kilmer Elementary School in Mahwah did not make its AYP benchmark target in language arts literacy.
