Wyckoff November 10, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 9 Incumbent mayor wins reelection to township committee by John Koster Mayor Rudy Boonstra has won reelection to his second full term on the Wyckoff Township Committee with 3,676 votes. The Republican incumbent edged out his Democratic challenger, Dr. Henry Velez, who received 2,066 votes for the one available seat on the township’s governing body. Boonstra, who was first appointed to fill an unexpired term and then elected in his own right, survived a spirited Republic primary challenge from The Reverend Jeff Boucher, a Wyckoff clergyman and chaplain of the Wyckoff Police Department. Boonstra has been a member of Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department Company since 1968. He was elected to the Wyckoff Board of Education in 1973, held every committee chairmanship on that board, and served two terms as board president. He was subsequently elected to the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education, and served on the regional board until 1994. When he was elected to the township committee in 2008, he left his seat on the Wyckoff Board of Adjustment, where he had served as a member for 19 years, including a 12 years as chairman. Velez is a physician who administers a medical board. He is a graduate of New York Medical College and has lived in Wyckoff since 1989. During his campaign, Velez pledged to stop tax increases, saying he would investigate current spending and explore ways to share services with neighboring communities. He also expressed an interest in working to preserve the township’s remaining open space, and said he would make traffic concerns a top priority. He said he was running to promote more open government and a variety of opinions among the committee members. Wyckoff voters also supported incumbent Republican Congressman Scott Garrett with 4,150 votes, Republican County Executive candidate Kathleen Donovan with 4,077 votes, and Republican Bergen County Sheriff Candidate Michael Saudino with 4,001 votes. The Democratic challengers received 1,574 votes for Congress for Tod Theise, 1,697 for county executive for Dennis McNerney, and 1,670 votes for Bergen County Sheriff for Leo McGuire. About 49 percent of the registered voters turned out for the election. Teens from YMCAs throughout the Northeast enjoyed their Fall Rally weekend at the Wyckoff Family YMCA recently.
