Midland Park Matters
A Publication of the Midland Park Chamber of Commerce
The Borough of Midland Park is preparing a survey to gauge the business climate in the community and determine what, if anything, the municipality can do to help. The survey has a component for businesses and one for residents. “We are doing this to provide insight to the businesses and to afford consumers and residents a means of providing input to what they feel would be important to them. Collectively, we are hoping that this will trigger a better match of services between business and our residents and consumers as well as poignant development of new businesses,” said Mayor Joseph Monahan. “A healthy business community benefits all.” The mayor said that the idea for the survey stemmed from earlier conversations with chamber of commerce members and its president, Chris Rossi. He explained its distribution was delayed for concern that the economic climate through the end of last year and early this year might have dampened responses. “While we all know it will be a slow recovery, I felt it was time to get out there,” Monahan said of the present timing. Rossi said he is looking forward to the survey and its results. “I think it is excellent that the town is reaching out to the business community to give them a chance to voice their opinion, since many live out of town and do not have the traditional voice residents have,” Rossi said.
Borough readies survey on business climate
In addition to seeking input from businesses as to where their customers come from and how their shopping patterns have changed, the survey asks what the town can do to support businesses. It also asks if business owners feel a two-year abatement on tax increases for property improvements would be enough of an incentive to invest in building upgrades. From residents, the survey seeks to ascertain whether
they shop in town, the types of goods and services they would like to have, obstacles to shopping locally and whether free senior transportation would be desirable, among other questions. Residents are also asked whether they use the borough’s and the board of education’s websites. Plans are to post the survey electronically on the borough’s website and provide hard copies through the library and other venues for those wishing to complete it on paper.
