Midland Park Matters
Marissa Cannata of Midland Park has been named captain of the Susquehanna University Dance Team. The team performs at all home men’s and women’s basketball games and at several campus and community events throughout the academic year. Completely student-run, the team was featured in “Dance Spirit” magazine’s August 2010 article focusing on college dance teams without coaches. The auditioned group is composed of 16 dancers and three alternates. Cannata, a senior French and public relations major, is a 2007 graduate of Midland Park High School and is the daughter of Jay and Joanne Times. This is Cannata’s third season on the team. She has been dancing for 20 years, receiving training from Joanne’s School of Dance, In the Spotlight, Y Dance, and Susquehanna University Dance Corps.

Residents who have confidential personal papers they would like to destroy are invited to Midland Park’s Free Mobile Paper Shredding Event, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13 in the municipal parking lot, 280 Godwin Avenue from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event is geared to preventing identity theft and saving trees by recycling. All paper documents will be shredded on site. No binders, plastic, metal or X-rays are permitted. Hardcover books, magazines, newspapers and photographs are not acceptable as well. For more information or directions, call borough hall at (201) 445-5720. The program is sponsored by the Bergen County Utilities Authority.

The U.S. flag flying in front of the Midland Park Post Office since May was first proudly flown over the headquarters of the US Marine Expeditionary Force in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. The flag was given to the staff and students of the Needlecraft School, across Godwin Avenue from the Post Office, in appreciation “for their dedication to the men and women of the US Marine Corps.” The students have been making pillows and sending them, along with toiletry items and other necessities, to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Needlecraft Director Ginny Fawcett asked the postmaster if the flag could be flown from their flagpole for a week so that the entire community could see it. Post office officials have decided to keep it and raise it daily until it is no longer serviceable. “It’s a nice thing of them to do,” said Fawcett. “It pleases me to see it across the street. I say a little prayer for the soldiers every time.” Since operation “Adopt a Soldier” began in 2003, Fawcett and her students have sewn, stuffed and delivered thousands of pillows to American soldiers overseas. The program gained national prominence earlier this year when it was featured on NBC’s Today Show, followed in September by a sizable donation from the Texas Road House restaurant chain to help sustain the program. Anyone interested in further information may contact Fawcett (201) 444-2976 or stop in at the school, 216-A
