Midland Park November 3, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 7 Parents seeks safety measures in front of high school The Midland Park Mayor and Council last week asked Police Chief John Casson to come up with recommendations for improving pedestrian safety on Prospect Street in front of Midland Park High School. The request followed a plea from a Donna Lane parent to take action before a serious accident occurs. “I’m hoping somebody can hear my voice and help me in this matter,” Paula Mancuso told the governing body, asking that a crossing guard be posted there. She said her 12-year-old daughter had nearly been run over by a car on her way to school last month while using the crosswalk. She explained that a southbound motorist was poised to make a left turn into the Midland Park High School driveway and had waived her daughter to cross the street, when another southbound driver who had not seen her daughter passed on the right and “came to a screeching halt coming within inches of hitting my daughter.” Mancuso added that another motorist coming out of the lot saw the incident and stopped to make sure her daughter was not injured. “The other car just drove away” she said. Barbara Sheridan of Second Street said that the Tintersection in front of the school driveway is confusing, and that approaching vehicles never slow down. “My son says that you have to make a run for it, or he’d never get to school on time,” she said. Sheridan suggested putting out a pedestrian warning sign in the middle of the roadway and even painting the street leading to the crosswalk. Nancy Bardmann of Franklin Avenue suggested a school custodian put out warning cones daily to serve as a warning. “It costs nothing,” she said. Bardmann also suggested that a daily police presence for a month, giving out tickets, would go a long way in slowing down traffic, and “would be good revenue for the town.” Police Chief John Casson said that he does not have the staff to post in front of the school at that hour. He said two officers are on duty, and one is stationed in front of Godwin School “because nobody car pools anymore.” The other officer patrols the town and handles calls, he said. He added that there have not been any reported traffic incidents in that location for 15 years. “We have the signs. We have the crosswalk. Pedestrians have the obligation to look and see that the traffic stops before stepping down. It’s a judgment call,” the chief said. Mayor Joseph Monahan suggested moving the flashing sign near Nativity Church closer to the high school, now that St. Thomas More is no longer there. Councilman Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan said that the entire area is a school zone and drivers should respect the speed limit there. Casson was charged with assessing the physical conditions and investigating measures that can be taken to improve the situation. Mayor Monahan asked that he report back to the governing body by the next meeting. The County of Bergen will also have to be consulted, since Prospect Street is a county road. Highland Elementary School receives grant Midland Park’s Highland Elementary School has received a $750 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program to support the school’s Summer Math Camp. Ridgewood on the Run Fuels & Convenience Store of Ridgewood worked with Dr. William B. Heebink, Midland Park’s former superintendent of schools, to secure the grant, which is one of 2,400 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations. The grants were made possible by funding from the ExxonMobil Corporation. “Highland Elementary School works hard to make learning interesting and fun” said Manager Barbara Altenbach. “As an Exxon retailer, I am proud to help young people of Midland Park.” The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. ExxonMobil believes that, as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of support.     Second Hand Treasures Winter Boot Headquarters Be epared Pr for the Cold Winter Ahead!
