YWCA Bergen County will host Rebecca Skloot, best-selling author of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” in her exclusive area appearance on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe, in Teaneck. The evening will include a “Meet the Speaker” reception sponsored by PNC Bank from 6 to 7 p.m. and book signing from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bookends in Ridgewood will donate 20 percent of the sales for each Rebecca Skloot book purchased in-store or at the event. This fall fundraiser caps off the YWCA’s year-long 90th Anniversary celebration. Proceeds will benefit YWCA scholarships for after school care and summer camps, special needs recreation programs, and the county’s only 24/7 Rape Crisis Hotline. Sponsors include PNC Bank, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Capital One Bank, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Author fundraiser caps Y’s 90th Anniversary celebration

Event to benefit Women at Risk International
The Ladies Bible Study of Franklin Lakes Baptist Church’s Jewelry Party will benefit Women at Risk International on Nov. 11 from 4 to 9 p.m. The party will feature jewelry and other products made by women who have been rescued from human trafficking. Proceeds from this event will benefit WAR’s fight against human trafficking. WAR International is a nonprofit organization established to place circles of protection around women at risk. WAR partners with programs in over 18 different countries by giving hope, sharing God’s heart, and providing havens of healing. Distinguished Speaker Series resumes at temple
Temple Beth Rishon’s third annual Food for Thought Distinguished Speaker Series, sponsored by the Fred Emert Memorial Adult Education Fund, will return Sunday, Nov. 14 at 9:45 a.m. at the temple. This first program in the series will feature Dr. Eitan Fishbane, professor of Jewish Thought at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Dr. Fishbane, one of the outstanding scholars of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, from medieval Kabbalah to modern Hasidism, will discuss “Mystical Theology: Ideas of God in the Kabbalah.” He was recently awarded the prestigious Charles A. Ryskamp Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. The program cost is $12 for temple members and $18 for non-members, and includes a breakfast buffet.
