Midland Park November 3, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 The Midland Park Board of Education is changing its requirements for student representatives to the board in an effort to attract more applicants to the position. The bylaws change was introduced at last week’s board meeting. “No one had applied for the position by the deadline last (school) year, and we felt this would better define the roles, responsibilities and qualifications for the position,” explained board Vice President Bill Sullivan. Under the terms of the proposed bylaws, a selection committee comprised of the high school principal, the assistant principals, the director of special education and teacher representatives will be established to evaluate applicants’ essays on why they would be the best pupil for such a position. The committee will recommend finalists in writing to the superintendent of schools, who will appoint the representative. Currently the recommendation is made by the high school principal. The proposed bylaws would make any high school student eligible for consideration. To qualify, the student representative must be considered by the selection committee Board changes rules for student representative to be “a student in good standing with regard to grades, attendance and disciplinary record.” Previous requirements limited applicants to 11th and 12th graders with a “B” average or better, a 90 percent attendance record and no more than two suspensions in the prior year. The candidate selected would serve for one year, from the annual reorganization meeting of the board until the meeting prior to the next organization meeting. The student member is expected to attend all board meetings, suggest agenda items and participate in all board discussions and deliberations except closed sessions, representing the student body’s viewpoint, not his or her own. He or she does not have a vote and is subject to removal for missing three consecutive meetings without approval, for improper behavior or for abusing the privileges and responsibilities of the position.
