The brothers simply look as if they are hitting their mark and delivering the scripted lines. There is a complete lack of emotional connection, and this hurts the overall film. Damon turns in a fine performance but is hampered by a script that has him look uncomfortable every time he makes a connection with the dead. For one who wants to avoid this “curse,” he resorts to using it often. It’s easier to respond to Damon the actor than to George the character. It’s impossible for Damon’s star charisma to completely disappear, but he never fully embraces the role. Instead, he tiptoes around it, leaving the viewer wanting more. De France, a new face in American film, is well cast as a star TV journalist. She looks the part and conveys the selfassurance of a woman who has climbed to the top of her profession through hard work, dedication, and raw grit. Her story arc is the most interesting as Marie develops, trading her TV celebrity for fame of another stripe. When dealing with what may lie out there after death, directors can resort to outright fantasy, scientific evidence, religious interpretation, or speculation. Eastwood never preaches in “Hereafter,” but also never really offers what the afterlife might be, other than showing images of blurry, bright lights. The film’s conclusion ties the three stories together, but does so in an underwhelming fashion. The finale has the look of a movie that has run out of steam before the credits roll. Rated PG-13, “Hereafter” is fair Eastwood. His story telling is interesting and performances for the most part are good, but the movie lacks dramatic punch. With the exception of the exciting tsunami sequence, the film progresses on one basic level. Some may call this dramatic unity, but it also makes for a film that extends like a flat plain rather than a landscape with valleys and peaks. He manages to create vivid personalities that never strike a false note. Eastwood’s direction makes “Hereafter” more cerebral and emotional than spooky or sensational. Though Marie and George go through some rough patches, they do so more introspectively than overtly. Marie jeopardizes her career and credibility when she begins to give public first-person testimony that there is an afterlife. George, who meets an attractive young woman at a cooking class, sees the possibility of a real relationship shattered when he dredges up some of her deeply buried memories. Marcus mourns silently for his brother while looking to psychics to heal the void he feels. He longs for guidance. For another director, “Hereafter” might be an admirable if imperfect achievement, but for Eastwood, the standard is pretty high. This, after all, is the director who gave us “Million Dollar Baby,” “Mystic River,” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.” The movie is utterly humorless. No, this is not a comedy, but the tone is so heavy that it approaches feeling oppressive. Critics should probably not be too hard on child actors, but the McLarens are portraying characters who occupy a full third of the movie. They should be stronger actors. Their Marcus walks around with the same blank expression throughout.
