New ordinances pave way for farmers market
Midland Park’s first Farmers Market is expected to debut on Saturday, June 5 and continue weekly through the fall. The Midland Park Borough Council approved the enabling ordinances at its last meeting after nearly a year of discussion. Oggi Echavarria, who originally proposed the venture to the governing body, plans to set up the seasonal operation in the park-and-ride lot behind Rosario’s Trattoria off Central Avenue in the Wortendyke section of town. It will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at least initially. According to the ordinances, the “seasonal agricultural market” is allowed as a conditional use in the B-1 Commercial Zone on a lot of at least two-thirds of an acre in size. It may operate on Saturdays only, from June 1 through Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Echavaria, the manager at Rosario’s, said he has been involved with open air markets since he was a teenager and is familiar with Ridgewood’s market. The ordinance defines Farmers’ Market as “an open-air location where vendors sell locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, plants and flowers,” all of which Echavarria’s vendors will offer. Organic foods, breads, nuts and dried fruits and coffees may also be available, as well as his own line of gourmet foods. The ordinance does not permit “flea market” vendors offering merchandise such as blankets, jewelry, etc. Each vendor who operates in the market will have to obtain a $50 license from the borough, which will be good for the entire season. Echavarria will charge an additional $40 per week.
