Midland Park’s Memorial Day Parade this Saturday, May 29 will be led by Grand Marshal Albert Douma, a US Navy veteran of World War II. Douma was drafted when he was 23, spending 18 months in the Pacific Theater fueling battleships, carriers, destroyers, cruisers and PT boats. He was then assigned to the destroyer USS Fred D. Berry, where he spent eight months at sea before the war was declared over. He was sent home on a merchant marine ship and arrived home on Thanksgiving Day, 1945. The parade, which will step off at 10 a.m. from the municipal building parking lot, will precede the traditional Memorial Day services at Veterans Plaza in Wortendyke, scheduled for 11 a.m. James Cova will be the principal speaker. A short service will also take place at the flagpole adjacent to the Little League Baseball field at 9 a.m. The Midland Park High School’s 82member concert band will be prominently

ing for this event. The solemn occasion will also be marked by the display of essays written by students in grades K-6 related to the meaning of Memorial Day under the auspices of the Midland Park Fire Department. The three winners in each grade will march in the parade with the fire department. “Over time, too many of our important holidays have lost some of their meaning on younger members of our population. This is a small, but helpful way to remind young people of the full significance of Memorial Day in America,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Heebink, who credited
Fire Chief Mark Berninger with suggesting the contest. “Our kids should know what the veterans did for them,” said Berninger. As in previous years, the parade route runs east on Highland Avenue to Vreeland, down Vreeland to Franklin, west on Franklin to Godwin and northwest on Godwin to Veterans Plaza. Residents are urged to line the parade route and attend the memorial services. The community at large is invited to the firehouse on Witte Drive after the services for hot dogs and soda served by the Ladies’ Auxiliary.
