Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • May 19, 2010 Midland Park The retirement of long-time athletic director Edward Salvi in June has led the Midland Park Board of Education to restructure its administrative team. Instead of hiring another administrator to replace Salvi, his duties will be restructured. Board President Robert Schiffer said that the reduction in administrators was part of the budgetary process in January and directly related to the almost total elimination of state aid to the district. “He’s been a great employee for more than 30 years. He’s worked hard at it and deserves all the benefits retirement will bring him,” Schiffer said. Salvi, who spent 34 years at MPHS, said that he is looking forward to retirement and a slower-paced lifestyle. “In this position things change minute by minute,” he said of the athletic director’s post he’s held for the past 18 years. Salvi began his career in education in the Weehawken school district, where he served as head football coach and head wrestling coach. During the three years he spent in that district, Salvi also taught health and physical education. When he joined the Midland Park High School, Salvi was head wrestling coach and assistant football coach, since he had played football Trenton State College. Although he will be retiring from Midland Park, Salvi will continue to serve as co-director of the Bergen County Coaches Association Holiday and Freshman Wrestling tournaments. He will also continue to work with the NJSIAA high school football playoffs at the Meadowlands, and as the computer operator for the district and regional wrestling tournaments. Salvi will also continue his service as secretary of the Bergen County Director of Athletics Association, and will still teach required courses for new coaches. Currently Salvi splits his time .6 as AD and .4 as director of the continuing education program. He also has secretarial support. The .6 AD position will now be assigned to MPHS Assistant Principal Nicholas Capuano, who will also maintain .4 of his assistant principal duties. “While the support is gone, so are about ten athletic programs at this point. Thus, the demands on the AD’s office are also reduced,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Heebink. “It seemed sensible to use Nick given his Board restructures administrative responsibilities long-time involvement in athletics, and so he could move between the two roles as needed within the same building.” Capuano was MPHS’s head football coach until the lack of players forced a merge into the Waldwick High School football program. The remaining asssistant principal duties will be assigned to Godwin School Assistant Principal Mike Healy, who will divide his time between the two schools. “Mike has been the full-time assistant principal at Godwin for two years -- not to mention his past roles in the high school building -- so this will allow for continuity there, even if at a reduced level. Mike also has prior experience at MPHS as an assistant principal, so he is familiar with the expectations at that site as well,” Dr. Heebink said. Dr. Heebink said that the board of education will be examining up to four alternatives for leadership of the continuing education program in the future. There is no decision yet on exactly how it will be handled, he said. “It is understood that this administrative arrangement is not ideal. Few things are after the huge reduction in aid that the district incurred. It is a matter of doing the best that we can with the personnel available after the budget reductions. I know that all will strive to do their best in these circumstances, but constituents need to understand that it is not possible to exactly duplicate the level of services of the past with fewer people in place,” Dr. Heebink noted.
