Municipal-purpose budget increases taxes $81
by John Koster The taxes on the average Wyckoff house assessed at $807,000 will increase by $81 a year for municipal purposes. This figure does not include any tax increases associated with the schools or Bergen County. The local budget of $16,647,957 increases spending by 0.13 percent. The overall expense of running the township has increased by $21,047 this year. The township will continue the hiring freeze instituted in 2009, and capital expenditures will be reduced by 16 percent. Strategic bidding also led to a 16 percent reduction in garbage disposal fees, and the members of the township committee once again waived their stipends for service, which resulted in a $20,000 savings. The total municipal tax levy has increased $616,042 due to a loss in state aid and revenue. Township increases include $100,166 in negotiated salaries, $139,020 in state-mandated health benefits, $36,896 in state-mandated pension increases, and $34,000 for the cleanup of snow. There were no comments on the municipal budget at last week’s meeting. At a previous work session, resident and taxpayer advocate Jerry Goetting had urged the Wyckoff Township Committee to cut the school budget by a million dollars, but Mayor Rudy Boonstra pointed out that, while the township committee understands the need to keep taxes down, the school budget had only
been defeated at the polls by narrow margin, and school officials had already cut costs before they had introduced the budget. The township committee members and board of education members are still conferring on the township’s proposed cuts to the defeated school budget.
Wyckoff’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremonies and Parade, scheduled for Monday, May 31, will begin at 9 a.m. with the Firefighters Memorial Service at Firehouse No. 1, directly behind town hall. This service honors all deceased Wyckoff firefighters. A Veterans’ Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. on the lawn of the Wyckoff Reformed Church on Wyckoff Avenue, site of the township’s War Memorial. All local Gold Star Mothers, military veterans, and the community are invited to attend the service and parade. In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled and the memorial service will be held inside the church. Charles Ryan, past commander, Midland ParkWyckoff V.F.W. Post #7086 will serve as master of ceremonies. Wyckoff Mayor Rudy Boonstra will provide the welcoming address. This year’s parade grand marshal is
