All Franklin Lakes businesses, members of the Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce, residents, and Franklin Lakes-based non-profit organizations are welcome to participate. Democrats host Candidates Night The Franklin Lakes Democratic Club will host a Candidates’ Night on Wednesday, June 2 at the Franklin Lakes Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, from 7 to 9 p.m. Scheduled speakers include Congressional Candidate Tod Theise, and Bergen County Freeholder Candidate John Hogan. Recreation department seeks volunteers Volunteers who are age 18 and older are needed by the Franklin Lakes Recreation Department to help out mornings and evenings at the center. Duties will include opening and closing the center, checking in members, registering new members, and providing basic information. Volunteers must be CPR and Rutgers certified. Children invited to play Olympic Jeopardy Children in grades four through six are invited to test their knowledge of Olympic sports at the Olympic Jeopardy Trivia Game at the Franklin Lakes Library on Wednesday, May 26 from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. All participants will receive an Olympic game T-shirt. Sponsored by Franklin Lakes Recreation, the program is open to Franklin Lakes’ residents only. Registration is required and will begin on May17. Meet the new superintendent Dr. Frank Romano, the K-8 district’s new superintendent of schools, will be introduced on May 26 at 7 p.m. in the Woodside Avenue School library and on May 27 at 9 a.m. in the Franklin Avenue Middle School music room. Dr. Romano will assume his post on July 1. The School Forum is designed to provide information about the Franklin Lakes School District and to answer residents’ questions, hear their concerns, and share ideas. Several members of the board of education will be present. Gilbert to speak at library On Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m., online selling and buying expert Cindy Gilbert will speak at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Learn how to get started selling on online auction sites. Gilbert will cover how to open a seller’s account, research, price, create listings, monitor listings, complete the transaction, and collect payment. All are welcome to attend. Auxiliary hosts Spring Celebration The Franklin Lakes Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its Spring Celebration on May 25. The event will be held at The Preakness Hills Country Club, 1050 Ratzer Road, Wayne. The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by a buffet dinner and dessert stations. There will be live entertainment. Tickets are $60 per person. Benefit concert set Local artist Steve Palmieri and former New Jersey performer Don Schoonover will present “Old, New, Borrowed & Blues,” featuring of acoustic and electric music, on Saturday, May 22. This 7 p.m. presentation will be held at the Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes. Also appearing will be “Coexist,” a 10-person musical ensemble. The concert will be hosted by Peaceful Yoga and PCFL Meditation Sangha. A Meet the Musicians reception will immediately follow the performance. Advance reservations are suggested. The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, is located at 730 Franklin Lake Road. VFW organizes Memorial Day events The Franklin Lakes Memorial Post 5702, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, will sponsor a parade and memorial to honor those who have given their lives during time of war in defense of the nation. The parade will be held May 31. This year’s grand marshal is Paul DiPetrillo, Korean War Air Force veteran and Life Member of the Franklin Lakes VFW Post. The marching bands from Ramapo High School and Hawthorne High School will participate as will the Newark Firefighters Pipe Band, the VFW Post 5702 Color Guard and post members, and local officials and organizations. All marching units will begin to assemble on Commerce Streets between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Commerce Street and Franklin Avenue. The line of march will proceed along Franklin Avenue and turn onto Bender Court, then proceed to Veterans Plaza at the VFW Post, where a service will be conducted. Refreshments will be served. Include the name of the organization, the individual in charge, and whether there will be vehicles as part of the group. Polner to exhibit at library Local resident Joanne Polner will exhibit her photography at the Franklin Lakes Public Library during May. Polner’s photos feature scenes from Martha’s Vineyard.
