Wyckoff May 19, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 11 Seniors robbed in international phone scam by John Koster An 89-year-old Wyckoff man and his 82-year-old wife were robbed of $2,781 in an international telephone scam when they tried to help their “grandson” – actually a telephone imposter – stay out of a Canadian jail following an alleged automobile accident in a rental car. The Wyckoff couple reported that, on May 7, they received a desperate phone call from their “grandson” who said he had been in a motor vehicle accident in Montreal and needed money to cover damages to a rental car or he would be sent to jail in Canada. He said he would have an attorney contact them once they agreed to help. Another person called, claiming to be an attorney, and directed them to a location in Paterson where they could wire the money to Canada. Several days later, the grandparents contacted their grandson and learned that he was in college and had not Schwartz (continued from page 6) settled so the board can move forward to embrace its real agenda: educating children. Schwartz has three children who attend the Woodside Avenue School. “This year will be an important one for our district,” she said. “We need to fill several key administrative positions and then we need to get to work on next year’s budget. Given the budget constraints at both state and local levels, it will be a challenging year for public education. I am happy to have the opportunity to serve as president. We have a lot to achieve and we have a very strong team of administrators and board members to work toward our goals. I am confident that we will have a successful year.” Reitz has one child in the High Mountain Road School and one who attends Indian Hills High School. She has previously served the board as the chair of the Community Relations Committee, a member of the Policy and Operations committees, and liaison to the Woodside Avenue School Parent Teacher Association. The board also formally appointed Dr. Frank Romano as the new superintendent of schools for the Franklin Lakes School District for the period of July 1, 2010 to July 1, 2014, and approved his employment agreement for that period. Romano has a doctorate degree in education from Seton Hall University. He previously served as the assistant superintendent of schools in Fort Lee. Prior to that, he held the position of assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Millburn Township. In other business, three trustees were sworn in to new three-year terms. Richard Koenigsberg, a trustee since 2003 who received 1,079 votes in the recent election, was sworn in first followed by two new members of the board: Christine Christopoul, who received 1,122 votes, and Gabrielle Guiterrez, who received 1,000 votes. The reorganized board adopted a meeting schedule for the year and re-adopted the curriculum, programs, and textbooks for 2010-11. Michael Solokas was reappointed as the board secretary/business administrator, and the school district’s custodian of public record, public agency compliance officer, security officer, and purchasing agent. Fogarty and Hara was reappointed as the school district’s law firm. been in an automobile accident, and had not received any money. The day after that, the fake “grandson” called up and asked for more money, but hung up when the grandparents asked questions suggesting that they knew they had been tricked. Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox warns residents that desperate appeals for money by telephone, with the request that the need be kept secret, are a classic scam technique. Fox said he wanted to publicize the case to prevent anyone else from becoming a victim of the same type of scam. Wyckoff Patrol Officer Brenda Groslinger investigated the complaint after the township residents learned they had been scammed. But STILL can’t lose that Tummy or Cellulite?
