Our hat’s off to the Girls Scout Cadettes #17 from Wyckoff’s Eisenhower Middle School who donated five cases of Girl Scout cookies for distribution to ECF families. Help an ECF family: Marjorie was very perplexed when her six-year old daughter, Julianna, complained of nausea and dizziness. She really had not been eating much, which prompted a visit to the doctor’s office. Several trips to the pediatrician left them baffled, until some tests came back and they learned that Julianna had leukemia. Marjorie told us that this was the worst day of her life and that she just cried and cried. Marjorie is a single mom who had been getting by with the help of her parents and friends. The diagnosis was emotionally crushing and she needed help getting her life reorganized to deal with many trips to the oncologist and to treatments, working things out with Julianna’s school, dealing with health insurance problems, and managing the crisis emotionally. An ECF Caseworker quickly helped Marjorie and she was soon able to deal more effectively with what was in front of her, and with her overwhelming fear. Our volunteers began a monthly food delivery, Marjorie got connected to community resources, bills got paid, and insurance company problems were resolved. Marjorie tells us, “I am not out of the woods yet. We have many medical issues to deal with, but we’re able to meet the challenges and I do not feel all alone in this. Thank you so much for all of your help!” If you want to help us to continue to meet the many challenges this and many other families face, please contribute to the Family Financial Fund. Another big need: We are in need of a new good quality copy machine for the Northern Regional Center. Save our van: A few years back, we were able to acquire a van due to the generosity of a local church. Since then we have made countless deliveries of groceries and other items to families. Now we need your help to keep the van in operation (maintenance, licensing, gas, and oil). If you want to help by contributing or by organizing a fundraiser, please let us know. Event news: Please attend our Wine & Art Night in Franklin Lakes at the Endless Vine on the new date, Tuesday, June 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. The suggested donation is $40, and we expect this event to sell out quickly. May is Mother’s Day Month at ECF. Please consider hosting an informal tea fundraiser in your home to honor ECF moms who shoulder quite a large load. The family Stroll-a-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 in Franklin Lakes starting at 9 a.m. Call us for details and to reserve your tickets to any of these fundraisers. During Bayersdorfer’s tenure, Monte added, the school district reopened Colonial Road School on time and under budget, added additional classrooms at the Franklin Avenue Middle School, air conditioned the Woodside Avenue and High Mountain Road schools, and expanded the use of technology, including the recently completed fiber optics project. She noted that he also instituted cutting edge programming for the district’s children, including the Discovery Science Program, The Young Consumers Program, Curiosity Corner, and the FAMS TV Studio. In addition, the district’s special education autistic program was extended to FAMS, a pre-K program was added, and test scores have improved, with more children demonstrating higher levels of proficiency throughout the district. Bayersdorfer, who holds a doctorate in education from Columbia University Teacher’s College, a master’s degree from William Paterson University, and a bachelor’s degree from the College of New Jersey, was named to “Who’s Who Among Top Executives” in 1998. He received the Family Life Education Leadership Award in 1996, and he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Bergen County School Administrators Association in 2005.
