Trustees name new K-8 district superintendent
by Frank J. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Board of Education has appointed Dr. Frank Romano as the new superintendent for the K-8 school district. Romano is currently assistant superintendent of schools in Fort Lee. He began his career in education as an English teacher in Ramsey and he became an administrator in Tenafly where he was the assistant to the superintendent of curriculum and instruction after serving as that district’s director of technology. He held the position of assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Millburn Township prior to assuming the position in Fort Lee. Romano holds a doctorate in education from Seton Hall University, a master’s degree in school administration and supervision from Montclair State University, a master’s degree in teaching from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. According to outgoing School Board President Carmen Monte, there were 24 applicants for the position, 11 of whom were interviewed. Three were selected for more extensive interviews, and a choice was made after visits to the selected applicant’s current school site were conducted during which stakeholders in that district were interviewed and a contract with the applicant was negotiated and sent to the Bergen County Schools Superintendent for approval. “I’m confident that our choice of a new superintendent will continue our school district’s history of excellence,” Monte said. She congratulated the school board for working diligently in choosing a new superintendent. Romano will replace Roger Bayersdorfer whose retirement will become effective on June 30. Bayersdorfer has been an educator since 1974 and he has been the school district’s superintendent since Sept. 1, 2000 when he replaced former superintendent Dr. Edward J. Sullivan who retired that year after leading the K-8 district for the previous 15 years. Prior to joining the Franklin Lakes school district, Bayersdorfer was the superintendent of the River Edge public school district from 1991 to 2000. Before working in River Edge, Bayersdorfer served as a school principal in Paramus and Westwood. He was also the administrative assistant for programs and instruction in Montvale, and a health and physical education teacher in Mahwah. Monte praised Bayersdorfer’s leadership, pointing out that during his tenure he has met the challenges of growing enrollment, additional state mandates, and the needs (continued on page 8)
