Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • May 12, 2010 FLOW Area Regional board reorganizes for 2010-11 by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education reorganized last week, with Business Administrator Frank Ceurvels officially announcing the Franklin Lakes, Oakland, and Wyckoff voters’ approval of the district’s $44,123,887 tax levy by a 102 vote margin to support the district’s $47,736,259 total budget. He then swore in three trustees who were elected in the recent school board election. Ceurvels said he had tracked the voting history of Ramapo Indian Hills budgets back to 1996, and this year’s voter turnout of 26 percent was almost twice as much as the usual turnout. He indicated the large turnout created some difficulties for voters and he suggested that more voting machines may have to be added to the polling places or the hours for voting may have to be extended to avoid the lines and waits voters experienced this year. Franklin Lakes trustee Wayne Peterson was reelected to his second three-year term on the regional school board, while Lynn L. Budd, who was appointed to the board last year to fill the unexpired term of Wyckoff trustee Kathy Scarpelli, was elected to her first full three-year term on the board, and Wyckoff representative Thomas Bunting, who will be replacing board member James Hogan, was sworn in to his first three-year term. Peterson, who served as the board’s president in 2009-10 was selected by a unanimous ballot of the board to be its president again for the 2010-11 school year, and Oakland representative Jane Castor, who served this past year as the board’s vice president, was also unanimously selected by a ballot of the board to be its vice president again in 2010-11. Peterson thanked the board for reelecting him as the board’s president, but emphasized that the board faces difficulties ahead. He expressed confidence that he and his colleagues will be able to move the district forward in these uncertain times to continue to provide the quality education that “we all want to see at Ramapo Indian Hills.” The school board also welcomed two new student representatives. Kate Brennan will represent Ramapo High School during the 2010-11 school year and Deanna Manniello will represent Indian Hills High School. Departing representatives Rachel Alpert of Ramapo and Priscilla Kelly of Indian Hills were recognized for their exemplary service during the past school year, and Peterson encouraged them to take their nameplates with them to college. In other business conducted by the school board, Ceurvels was reappointed as the school district’s business administrator and purchasing agent, the school district’s existing policies and by-laws were approved, and the curriculum for 2010-11 was approved. In addition, Fogarty & Hara was reappointed as the school board’s law firm.
