Community gathers to pray
Nearly 90 residents turned out last week for Midland Park’s National Day of Prayer observances. The event was moved from the town hall lawn, the traditional venue, to the firehouse to safely accommodate all attendees. Organized by Rev. Lloyd Vorderstrasse, pastor of the Church of God, the annual event featured musical selections by the Children’s Choir of ‘Mom’s in Touch,’ an area organization led by Karen Verhoog. Ilya Maslov provided musical accompaniment. Pictured below: children’s performance. At right: attendees praying.

Maas was recognized for his honorable service to the Midland Park Police Department from 1991 through his recent retirement. Maas served as a Policemen’s Benevolent Association delegate for 18 years, and was a D.A.R.E. officer, educating local school children about resisting drugs and alcohol, for 16 years. Midland Park Police Chief John Casson praised Maas for his work as a D.A.R.E. officer, saying he had done a fabulous job with the students and had forged a fine relationship with the school district. Maas was also honored for his courage, skill, and professionalism. The educators who were recognized, Konde, Snyder, and Nunziata, were greeted by Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Heebink and Godwin School Principal Mike Healy. Heebink noted that the three teachers have collectively logged 67 years in their profession, and have received a total of three Governor’s Teacher Recognition Awards, two PTA Fellowships, and a Knights of Columbus award. Each teacher was characterized as a cornerstone for her grade level. Heebink said each woman had built a strong team of teachers and aides around her. Nunziata, an 18-year teaching veteran, was praised for blending common sense with innovative teaching strategies. Snyder was noted for her involvement in various activities and for serving as a mentor to many others. She has logged 24 years in the district. Konde was recognized for her expertise in student readiness, and her ability to discern learning disabilities at a very early age. She has been an educator for the last 25 years.
