Glenn of Melissa Jacobsen of Jacobsen Landscape & Construction in Midland Park received the “Citizen of the Year” award during the recent Community Awards Night sponsored by VFW Post 7086 and American Legion Post 130. Charlotte Spencer served as mistress of ceremonies. Charles Ryan, Esq., the borough’s municipal judge, was presented with the Cosgrove-Marcus Veteran of the Year Award. Other award recipients were former Fire Chief Mike Rau as Top Firefighter, Ambulance Corps Captain Mike Junta as Top Corpsman, and former Patrolman Al Maas as Top Cop. Educator of the Year awards went to three Godwin School teachers who will be retiring this June: Rosemary Konde, Lynn Snyder, and Christine Nunziata. The Jacobsens were cited for their outstanding contributions and generosity in the beautification of the community. They were a major force in the redesign of Veterans Plaza in Wortendyke. Their Design Center on Godwin Avenue, opened in 1998 next to the Midland Park Water Department, has created a beautifully landscaped outdoor showroom for the public to enjoy. Glenn and Melissa are founding contributors to the Midland Park Education Foundation. The company has participated in numerous educational presentations as well as Earth Day and Arbor Day activities at many local schools. They also support local athletic teams, the Children’s Love Fund, and the Touch the World Skate Park in Midland Park. The Jacobsens have donated the use of “Anthony,” their antique truck, which is transformed each Christmas into the “Santa Shuttle” for use at the town tree lighting, and transformed again each summer into a float to honor and transport the community’s veterans at several local parades. Ryan was cited for his numerous contributions to veterans and the community at large. A decorated Marine Corps veteran who served two years in Vietnam, Ryan is a member of both the American Legion and VFW posts and was VFW Post Commander for two years. He has served on the Veterans’ Memorial Day Commit-

tee for 25 years and has been the emcee at the Memorial Day Ceremonies in Midland Park and in Wyckoff, as well as the Midland Park Veteran’s Day ceremony for the past 25 years. He was one of the major forces that resulted in the VFW’s purchase of the Legion Hall. Ryan has been equally generous with his time to civic groups in town and has received many awards through the years in recognition of his contributions to Midland Park, to the legal profession, to veterans’ organizations, and to the larger community. He has served as Midland Park recreation coach (coaching 42 teams over a 17-year period), CCD teacher, Boosters president, and Archdiocesan school board member, and has done pro-bono work for countless individuals.
Junta was described by Ambulance Corps President Alan Kooreman as a man who loves to serve people. A lifelong resident of Midland Park, Junta has been a member of the volunteer ambulance corps for 12 years. Since he joined the corps in 1998, he has logged over 6,000 hours of duty time and has responded to well over 1,500 emergency calls. He also serves as a borough councilman, a position to which he was elected in 2008. He is a member of Faith Reformed Church, and is very active in Stock Aide and the youth groups. Rau has logged 25 years of service to the fire department, including four years as chief. He was praised for devoting countless hours to the fire department, including his work (continued on page 13)
