Fall sports registration begins Registration for flag football, soccer and cheerleading is now open. Participants may register online at www.gameplan411. com or at the recreation office Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees for fall sports are: cheerleading for grades two through eight, $85; flag football for kindergarten and first grade, $65; and football for grades two through eight, $190. Soccer fees are: kindergarten clinic, $45; grades one and two, $55; grades three through eight, $70; and grades nine through 12, $75. After May 14, only in-person registrations will be accepted. There will be a $50 late fee added. Those who register for soccer after May 14 will be placed on a waiting list. Photos are required for players in third grade and up. New this fall will be a travel soccer team in the NJJSL at Division 3 (possibly Division 4) level. These teams are co-ed. Contact the recreation department at (201) 847-8200 for more information. Camp opportunities available Franklin Lakes welcomes children to register for Summer Recreation Camp, which is being run by the Wyckoff Family YMCA. Five week-long sessions will run weekdays from June 28 through July 30 from 9 to 1 for children in kindergarten through grade four, and from 9:15 to 1:15 for those in grades five through eight. The fee is $90 per week. Junior Recreation Camp is for children who will be entering kindergarten through grade four and will be held at High Mountain Road School. Camp includes arts & crafts, sports, on-site entertainment and special guests, “Wet & Wild Day,” and Y Carnival. Senior Camp is for children in grades five through eight and will be held at the Woodside Avenue School. This program includes a special off-site trip each week, swimming at the Y once a week, sports, games, arts & crafts, and special events. Registration forms are available at the Y at 691 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff or at the Franklin Lakes Recreation Office at 1 Vichiconti Way, Franklin Lakes. Lions Club to host Golf Outing The Franklin Lakes Lions Club will host its annual Golf Outing on Thursday, May 13 at High Mountain Golf Club, 845 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Attendees may select their own tee time. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. There will be an open bar at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and awards at 6:30 p.m. This year’s
event will feature a new “scramble” format. The package is $250 and includes: greens fees, golf cart, open driving range, buffet lunch, cocktail reception, and the open bar followed by the awards ceremony and dinner. Republican Club to meet The Franklin Lakes Republican Club will meet May 17 at 7:45 p.m. at the Bender Court Ambulance Corps Building. All are invited to attend. The club meets on the third Monday of the month. The Franklin Lakes Republican Club is a non-profit organization established to represent the Republican Party in town. It is devoted to the cause of community improvement and good government through the medium of an organized Republican Party and the support of candidates for public office who will best represent the interests of the residents and taxpayers of Franklin Lakes. Library trustees to meet The Franklin lakes Library Board of Trustees will meet Monday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the library’s Local History Room. This meeting is open to the public. Jewelry class offered Glenn Arkin of Strawtown Jewelry will teach a class on how to make earrings at the Franklin Lakes Public Library on Wednesday, May 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Supplies for the earrings will be provided. VFW organizes Memorial Day events The Franklin Lakes Memorial Post 5702, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, will sponsor a parade and memorial to honor those who have given their lives during time of war in defense of the nation. The parade will be held May 31. This year’s grand marshal is Paul DiPetrillo, Korean War Air Force veteran and Life Member of the Franklin Lakes VFW Post. The marching bands from Ramapo High School and Hawthorne High School will participate as will the Newark Firefighters Pipe Band, the VFW Post 5702 Color Guard and post members, and local officials and organizations. All marching units will begin to assemble on Commerce Streets between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Commerce Street and Franklin Avenue. The line of march will proceed along Franklin Avenue and turn onto Bender Court, then proceed to Veterans Plaza at the VFW Post, where a service will be conducted. Refreshments will be served. Any organization that is planning to participate in the parade as a marching unit is asked to contact the VFW at

Include the name of the organization, the individual in charge, and whether there will be vehicles as part of the group. DPW offers new recycling services The Franklin Lakes Department of Public Works is providing three new recycling services. The first new service is paper collection. Residents, businesses, organizations, and schools are encouraged to bring newspapers and circulars to the container located in the DPW yard, which is located behind police headquarters on DeKorte Drive, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Papers must be tied or placed in paper bags. The borough’s carting service will continue regular curbside pickup of paper, but this added facility gives residents the options of dropping off bundled paper. The borough is also taking over the collection of heavy metal goods such as washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators. Pick up of metal goods will be the first Friday of the month. Residents should call the borough clerk at (201) 891-0048 to schedule a pickup. Nancy Durkin, the DPW Administrative Assistant, encourages residents to call the DPW directly at (201) 891-4333 for information. The third new service concerns hazardous materials, including electronic waste such as old TVs, computers, and stereos. Items can also be dropped off at the DPW facility. Learn to grow herbs Jacobsen Landscape Design will present a program about growing herbs for healthy living at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, on May 11. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Learn how to select herbs, the types of soil to use, water needs, light requirements, garden design, proper care and harvesting, and more.
