Republican Club chooses new candidate for mayor
by Frank J. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Republican Club has unanimously nominated Councilman Frank Bivona as its candidate for mayor in the upcoming primary election. The club also nominated incumbent Councilwoman Nathalie Lota and Frank J. Pedone as the organization’s candidates for the borough council. The nominations were made at a meeting of the Republican Club early last week and there were no nominations of other candidates from the floor, including Mayor Maura DeNicola. But later in the week she received the nomination of the Bergen County Republican Organization to run for election to the Bergen County Board of Freeholders. Pedone is running in place of incumbent Councilman Steven Marcus, who decided not to seek reelection. He cited the time commitment it requires to be on the council. “It’s been a pleasure to serve the residents of Franklin Lakes,” Marcus said, “but the simple fact for me is the time commitment has taken up more of my personal and business time than I think is reasonable for my given situation.” Bivona and his wife Maureen have been residents of Franklin Lakes for 15 years and they have two children, ages 15 and 17. He received a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University and has been active in the borough’s recreation programs as a coach of girls’ and boys’ softball, baseball, and basketball. He has also been active with the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament where he has served on the advisory board and co-directed the school’s basketball program. Recently retired, his prior work experience was primarily in the bond insurance business where he worked with municipalities country-wide on the issuance of debt obligations. For the last five years, he was chief executive officer of FGIC Corporation. Before joining FGIC, he was vice chairman and chief financial officer of the Ambac Financial Group for 18 years. Prior to Ambac, he was with Citibank in various finance positions, including CFO of Citibank’s global insurance division. He has served on several charitable boards including Junior Achievement and the YMCA of Greater New York. “I am honored to be nominated for mayor by the Republican Club of Franklin Lakes,” Bivona said. “This nomination means so much because it comes from a united Republican base which has been reinvigorated as evidenced by the record turnouts to meetings. I congratulate my conominees, Nathalie Lota and Frank Pedone for the council and look forward running a spirited campaign with them. (continued on page 15)
