Four candidates seek three seats on K-8 school board
by Frank J. McMahon Four candidates will be seeking election to the three seats available on the Franklin Lakes Board of Education this year. Two incumbents and two new candidates are seeking election. The terms of School Board President Carmen Monte; Richard Koenigsberg, the board’s current chairman of the Operations Committee; and Deborah Taylor, the chair of the Curriculum Committee, expire this year. Monte and Koenigsberg are seeking reelection; Taylor has decided not to seek a new term. Christine Christopoul and Gabrielle Gutierrez, both of whom live on Saddleback Trail in the Woodside Avenue School district, are the two other candidates. Monte was first elected to the board in 2003 and has lived in the borough for 12 years. She has two children, a daughter attending New York University and a son who is a senior at Ramapo High School. A 1983 graduate of Fordham University with a BS in accounting and computer science, she was employed by the advertising firm of Deutsche, Shea & Evans from 1983 through 1995, where she was responsible for human resources, operations, legal, taxes, and real estate and treasury functions. She has been the board’s president since 2007, and was vice president from 2006 to 2007. She has served as chairwoman of the Finance Committee and of the Curriculum & Instruction Committee, of which she was a member for four years. Koenigsberg is a seven-year trustee and a partner in the New York City certified public accounting firm of Spielman Koenigsberg & Parker. He has served as vice president of the board, chairman of the Operations Committee, and a member of the Finance and Personnel committees and the board’s negotiations team. He has also been the board’s representative to the education foundation and to the borough council. He has been a coach of girls’ basketball and boys’ baseball. Christopoul holds a BS in financial decisions systems and an MBA in management information systems from the
State University of New York at Albany. She was formerly a management consultant at Andersen Consulting and a senior operations manager at Merck-Medco. She has three children who attend the district’s schools. She has also (continued on page 12)

Congratulations to the Ramapo Varsity Cheerleaders for placing fourth at Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The squad placed fourth in their division and fifteenth out of the 42 teams that competed. They are coached by Danielle Egan.
