May’s passion is softball. As a freshman at Bergen Tech., she played on the varsity team and received First Team All League Honors, Honorable Mention All County, and Team MVP Awards. She was touched when her team played Barringer High School of Newark. She noticed how ill-equipped the team was and was concerned for the players’ safety and about the girls possibly losing interest in the sport she loves so much. She decided to take action, and started an equipment drive. She utilized a network of elite club teams to gather gently used gear. May’s own club team, the North Jersey Avalanche, played a big part in donating many items, including connecting the coach to several cleat manufacturers with the hope of getting free cleats for any girl who needs them. When all was said and done, May donated 10 equipment bags to the Barringer High School Softball Team. Each bag contained a glove, a batting helmet, and a high tech bat. Two of the bags also contained full sets of catcher’s gear. A pop up warm up net was generously donated by Karen Stritmatter of the North Jersey Rangers Club Team. All of the equipment was carefully cleaned and polished before it was packed away. May’s next step is to contact local sporting goods stores to start a bring one/buy one program. Any softball player who comes in to buy a new bat, glove, bag, etc. will be asked to donate an old one. All of the donated equipment will go to under- privileged high schools and recreation teams in the area. children.” She added that she brings varied perspectives to the position. “With the experience I have gained as an educator for the past 24 years, I bring a unique perspective of the current trends in education and curriculum development. As a parent of two children currently in the Midland Park School System, I hold ﬁrst hand knowledge of the community concerns as well as the desired direction the people of Midland Park would like to see our school system take,” she said. Formicola, a 20-year resident, is a graduate of Bergen Community College and Chubb Institute. He is vice president of technical services for Merrill Lynch/Bank of America. He has been active with many recreational and school organizations over the years, particularly through his hobby of photography and coaching. He is the current president of the Midland Park Softball and the Midland Park Basketball associations, positions from which he is stepping down in August after seven years. He has six children ranging in age from 2 to 19 years old, two of whom are in college; the others attend Midland Park schools. Formicola said running for the board seemed the right step for him at this time. “I have always been involved, most recently in softball and basketball. I ﬁgured that since I am giving those up and still want to continue involved, going on the board of education was the best thing I could do,” he said. The election will be held on April 20, during the schools’ spring break. At that time voters will also decide on the school district’s budget for 2010-11. She is a Brownie leader and a past cheerleading coach. She and her husband, Vincent, have two daughters, one in sixth grade and a 10th grader at Midland Park High School.
