McMahon The Franklin Lakes K-8 school district recently received its 2008-09 reports cards from the New Jersey Department of Education. The NJDOE has provided every school in the state with these annual accountability reports since 1995, when the New Jersey Legislature mandated their production. The report cards contain detailed statistical profiles of the district’s schools in the areas of school environment, student information, student performance indicators, staff information, and district financial information. According to Superintendent Roger Bayersdorfer, the district educates approximately 1,500 pupils in three elementary buildings containing kindergarten through grade five and one middle school that serves students in grades six through eight. All elementary schools are conveniently located in different areas of the borough. The district employs nearly 244 people, including approximately 185 teachers. During 2008-09, enrollment at the middle school was 519 and the average class size was 18.5 students. The state average was 18.4 students. The New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge test results for grade six indicated that 89.6 percent of the 163 students tested were at or above the proficiency level in language arts literacy; in mathematics, the percentage was 92.7. The comparable averages in the state were 70.1 in language arts and 71.2 in mathematics. Of the 170 seventh graders tested, 94.7 percent of the students tested were at or above the proficiency level in language arts; the figure was 79.4 percent in math. The state averages were 72.4 in language arts and 66.8 in math. The results for the 187 eighth graders tested showed 93.6 percent at or above proficiency in language arts and 87.2 percent in math. The state averages were 82.5 percent in language arts and 71.8 in mathematics. The student/administrator ratio at the middle school was 259.5 students to one administrator versus a state average of 276.8. The student/faculty ratio was 9.4 students to one faculty member versus a state average of 10.8 to one. In addition, 98.2 percent of the faculty and administration have master’s degrees and 1.8 percent have Ph.D./Ed.D. degrees. The median salary is $136,500 for administrators and $56,124 for the faculty. The state averages are $106,593 and $55,350, respectively. District administrators have an average of 20 years of experience; faculty members have an average of seven years of experience. The district’s total cost per pupil for 2008-09 was $15,849 versus a state average of $12,287. The total per pupil cost, including tuition expenses, transportation, lease purchase interest, residential costs, judgments against the school district, equipment, facilities/acquisition costs, restricted expenses less nonpublic services and adult schools, and students sent out of district, was $16,884 per pupil versus a state average of $13,862.
