Wyckoff March 3, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Commuter parking limits planned in township by John Koster The Wyckoff Township Committee has introduced an ordinance that would prohibit outside commuter parking on several local streets near Coolidge School during the day. The ordinance was recommended by Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox because a group of about 15 commuters, most of whom are not Wyckoff residents, routinely park their cars in front of houses in the Coolidge School vicinity while they wait for the bus to New York City at the Grandview Avenue bus stop. This use of residential streets for commuter parking has caused quality-of-life issues and possible interference with mail delivery and snow plowing for area residents. Township officials say that excessive all-day commuter parking has led to street congestion and line-of-sight problems for local motorists. The ordinance, if adopted in its current form, would prohibit parking between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon on Cottage Road, Coolidge Terrace, Nancy Lane, Fox Hollow Road, Deep Brook Road, Sunrise Drive, Hilltop Lane, Megan Court, and Circle Drive. Parking is being limited during the two-hour window when commuters would be mostly likely to have parked their cars. Parking during the rest of the day would be allowed so that residents and friends would not be inconvenienced when visiting friends or when parking on the street for short intervals. Nancy Lane would be posted with no parking signs, but the other roads may not be posted. However, enforcement would restrict commuter parking on the designated streets. “The Wyckoff Police Department will monitor the situation and communicate with the commuters to encourage that they cease parking on municipal roadways,” Chief Fox said. “Commuters should consider purchasing a Park & Ride permit in Wyckoff or other municipalities if available. Wyckoff Park & Ride permits are still available.” Chief Fox served as Wyckoff’s traffic officer for many years before his appointment as chief of police. The township is a perennial winner of traffic safety awards from the Automobile Association of America for measures taken to enhance traffic and pedestrian safety. The Wyckoff Township Committee accepted the applications of two new volunteer fire fighters at last week’s public meeting. The governing body accepted the application of Brian Duffy into Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Company #2 and the application of Timothy Murray Sr. into Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Company #3. The township’s fire companies recently welcomed four probationary or apprentice firefighters to the ranks. Wyckoff is said to be the only volunteer fire department in Bergen County that conducts competitive inspections by fire professionals from outside the township. J.
