Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • June 23, 2010 Wyckoff County awards Open Space funds for Russell Orchards by John Koster Wyckoff officials have received Bergen County’s contract papers for the $1.8 million in Bergen County Open Space funds to be used for the purchase of Russell Farms. The total cost of the five-acre property, now owned by developer Robert Milanese, has been estimated at from $2.7 million to $3.1. The land is currently polluted by pesticides and undergoing clean-up. Wyckoff will accept the land only when it has been approved as clean by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The pollution includes traces of pesticides left over from the operation of Russell Farms as an active orchard with a farm stand on Russell and Sicomac avenues. The exact plans for the property’s use have not been determined, and the township committee is seeking resident input before making a decision. The site is said to be too small to accommodate a soccer field. Russell Farms was the second-to-last working farm in Wyckoff, which had seven working farms as recently as 1991. Abma’s Farm is the township’s last remaining farm. Other sources of the purchase price include possible future grants from the county and the state and Wyckoff’s own open-space set-aside approved by voters in 2006. A half-cent for every $100 of assessed valuation is set aside into a fund to purchase open spaces. A large but undisclosed number of resumes for the position of interim superintendent of schools for Wyckoff’s K-8 school district is being examined by members of the Wyckoff Board of Education. The board was expected to choose the finalist at its meeting earlier this week, according to Board President A. Robert Francin. Villadom Times incorrectly reported last week that Richard Kuder, principal of the Eisenhower School, had been named to the interim position. In fact, a board Board interviews for superintendent motion to that effect on June 7 failed to gain the board’s support by a vote of 4-3 in spite of overwhelming support for his appointment from the large audience in attendance. Kuder was named acting superintendent last spring when Superindent Janet Razze took an extended leave and then resigned from her post. The board officially accepted her resignation at the June 7 meeting and honored her with an official proclamation.
