Mayor backs Independent
(continued from page 6) Republican Party and then decided to run as an Independent. Swist said Sciancalepore has a right to run in the general election as an Independent candidate, and he welcomed the competition from her. But he said DeNicola’s action to support an Independent candidate confused him, and he thinks it will be detrimental to her. “She is politically astute, but I just think people will see this as an unraveling of Maura DeNicola,” Swist said. “How can you be a member of the Republican Club and observe the party platform and then support someone who has not been selected by the party? I’m concerned about that. “It is certainly contrary to any conventional behavior pattern. I think it slaps the party right in the face. It’s a slap at the entire party organization and the Bergen County Republican Party.” Swist said he suspected that DeNicola’s support of Sciancalepore and the write-in candidacy of Joan Mokray for a seat on the borough council as a Democrat are related. He said Mokray’s membership in the Republican Club will have to be reviewed. “Obviously, it would be inappropriate to have her as a member of the club,” he said. When BCRO Chairman Robert Yudin was contacted, he said he had just learned about the issue late the previous day, and he did not know about it until that time. “I was not consulted and I was not advised,” Yudin said, adding that he did not want to comment further until the situation clarifies itself. However, he did emphasize, “The BCRO supports the Republican ticket of all Republicans who won in the primary election. Once the primary is over, we unite and the BCRO supports the winners of the primary. That is my position as chairman and that will always be my position unless something developed that is egregious.” DeNicola explained that she signed Sciancalepore’s nominating petition because the Independent candidate supports lower taxes, reduced spending, and open government. “I find Frank Bivona’s comments to be hypocritical and insincere and his 10 percent tax hike and opposition to the governor’s 2.5 percent budget cap plan are contrary to Republican values,” DeNicola stated in a written response. “Lisa Sciancalepore is a registered Republican and a fiscal conservative. The United States is governed by a Constitution which protects Mrs. Sciancalepore’s right to run for public office, and I support that right and I support the right of the residents of Franklin Lakes to have a mayor who is elected rather than selected.” Mokray explained her decision to run as a Democrat, saying she had been unaffiliated with a political party, although she had declared herself a Republican in order to vote in previous primary elections. She said she would have declared herself a Republican in this primary if there had been people she could have supported, but she emphasized that she is now officially a Democrat. “I joined the Republican Club because I thought I could influence what would happen, but I found they had their minds made up about what they were doing and there was no opportunity for a wide variety of opinions to come into play,” Mokray said. In response to Swist’s comment about reviewing her membership in the Republican Club, Mokray said she would like her $25 dues to the club returned to her. “I looked at it as an investment in trying to be part of something important, but I found that the process was pretty closed,” she said.
