(continued from page 7) other recent year,” Dr. Heebink said. During the current school year, the French IV and V classes are combined. If that were done next year, the class would have 12 students. Instead, however, the French V Advanced Placement class is being dropped, and French III and IV are being combined for a total of 21 students. Dr. Heebink explained that since next year’s total enrollment in French is expected to be 50-55 students, the teacher’s full time schedule was reduced to .8, allowing for her to teach five classes, one of them combined. The contractual agreement with the MPEA only permits the combination of two classes one time during the day. Since French V would have been a sixth class with only three students, it was discontinued. “If money were no object, it would be wonderful to offer this course for these motivated students, along with a variety of other great courses for similarly small numbers of students with high interest. Unfortunately, that is certainly not the situation this year, which is why we need to examine a range of options,” Dr. Heebink concluded. The contractual agreement only permits the combination of two classes one time during the day.
