McMahon Lisa Sciancalepore has decided to seek election as mayor of Franklin Lakes in the November general election, and has filed a nominating petition with the Bergen County Board of Elections as an Independent candidate. Sciancalepore, who is currently a registered Republican, filed her petition on June 8, the day of the primary and the deadline for Independents to file. She was appointed to the school board in 2007 and elected to a three-year term in 2008. She will be on the ballot in November as an Independent candidate challenging Republican Frank Bivona, who was endorsed by 357 of the borough’s Republican voters in last week’s uncontested primary. Bivona was the lone Republican mayoral candidate to file a nominating petition for last week’s primary. Incumbent Republican Councilwoman Nathalie Lota and Republican Club member Frank Pedone, who were chosen by the borough’s Republican Club to run in the primary, were also endorsed by the borough’s GOP voters. Lota received 332 ballots and Pedone received 346. No Democratic or Independent candidates filed nominating petitions for the two available council positions, but residents Joan Mokray and Lorenzo Puertas received more that the five necessary write-in votes to be on the ballot as Democratic council candidates in November. In 2006, Sciancalepore sought election to the borough council as a Democrat when Mayor Maura DeNicola was elected as mayor and Republicans Leslie Greer and Brian Trava were elected to the council. DeNicola is not seeking reelection this year in Franklin Lakes, but she was nominated in last week’s primary as a Republican candidate for the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
