Boonstra received the Republican endorsement with 997 votes; Boucher received 505 ballots. The lone Democratic candidate, Dr. Henry Velez, received 129 votes to win a spot on the ballot in the November general election. The turnout at the polls was 14 percent, which election workers said reflects the usual turnout for primaries as opposed to general or school board elections. Boonstra told Villadom TIMES, “I would thank all of the Republican and Independent voters for their support.” He also thanked his campaign team, stating that the goal had been to run a positive race that pointed out his past record and his vision for the future. “I’m a little bit disappointed,” said Boucher a few days after the election. “I think I’m most disappointed with the turnout, but I understand this is a primary and I think primaries are overall a beneficial, rather than a detrimental, thing.” Boucher, an ordained minister, is pastor of Powerhouse Christian Church and is active in local youth and sports programs. Boonstra is a long-time member of the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department and served on the K-8 and regional boards of education. Both men are widely popular in Wyckoff for the large amount of time they commit to volunteer service to the community. Dr. Velez said he registered for his party’s primary because Wyckoff needs to reflect a wider range of its citizens in municipal government. Brian Scanlan, the lone Democrat on the township committee, recently became the first Democrat elected in Wyckoff since the Depression of the 1930s, though Democrats in recent years have run for office and garnered hundreds of votes, but generally failed to carry even a single district by a majority. In April Judge Robert Guida, a retired judge and an election official, ruled that Boucher had a right to a spot on the Republican side of the June 8 primary ballot despite a challenge to his nominating petition by a Republican League official. Jeremiah Larkin, a Republican County Committee official from Wyckoff, had challenged the signatures on Boucher’s nominating petition and asked for a verdict on whether they were valid. Just before press time, Judge Guida affirmed the validity of Boucher’s petition. Chris DePhillips, Rudy Boonstra and Kevin Rooney. eurica Setting smiles straight for more than 10 years.
