Midland Park June 9, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Midland Park special education students whose Individual Educational Plan (IEP) dictates summer instruction will get those services in-district for the first time in memory. The board of education at its meeting last week approved hiring teaching staff, aides and two nurses for the Extended School Year (ESY) program, to run from July 6 through 30. In prior years, almost all special education services required in IEPs for the summer were contracted for outside of the school system. The district will hold three classes, and will provide any required resource room services and related services (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language services). According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Heebink, by offering the program in house, the district will have better control over quality, and program continuity will be enhanced, since in most cases the same classroom teacher Special education to be held in-house this summer the children had during the regular school year will provide instruction for the additional month. The local program will also save the children from spending part of their summer day on a long bus ride. “It is also nice that our own staff can obtain summer employment in Midland Park, especially in light of their willingness to cooperate following the recent severe state aid loss,” Dr. Heebink added. All employees agreed to a wage freeze for the 2010-11 school year. The superintendent said that the change of venue is expected to save the district $100,000 in busing and tuition costs. He credited Sheralyn Gottlieb, the district’s director of special services, with taking the initiative to put the program together. Staff hired last week will be paid on an hourly basis as per the contract with the Midland Park Education Association. The teachers and their assignments will be: Rosemary Ferullo – MD (CBI) Class – 3 days per week, 3 hours per day Eileen Horn – LLD Class – 5 days per week, 4 hours per day Jason Gangi – PSD Class – 4 days per week, 2.5 hours per day Jennifer Harris – Resource Reading/ Language Arts – 4 days per week, 1.5 hours per day Danielle Kirsch – Resource Math – 4 days per week, 1.5 hours per day.
