June 9, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 35 Letters to the Editor (continued from page 29) On doing research, it appears that representative Garrett has been one of the major recipients in congress from pharmaceutical interests of large sums of contributions over the years, and therefore it appears his loyalty lies with them, not the public he is supposed to represent: you and me. I called his office in Washington and attempted to make a date to meet him and ask him for his position. I was told to fax a note to his office with my request, which I did, and I would be contacted. Three weeks went by and no response. I again called, asking for the person who booked his calendar. I could not get connected and left a message to call me. Again, there was no response for two weeks. I called, and this time was able to speak to that person. I was told nicely that he was very busy and that they would get back to me. Well, two weeks have gone by and guess what -- still no response! Representative Garrett knows I want an answer as to why he supports the pharmaceutical industry, mail order giants and giant chains, and not local pharmacies. My thought, Republican, Democrat, and Independent: Is this who you want to represent you in congress -- someone who ignores the people? Joe Sokoloff Wyckoff Dear Editor: The Wyckoff YMCA thanks the more than 3,000 people who attended our recent production of “The Wizard of Oz.” They saw 85 actors, singers, and dancers follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra. Oz was the fourth major stage production of our Y Arts Theater Company over the past two years. Our goal is to bring front row entertainment to your front door at affordable prices – as we seek to become the preeminent community theater in North Jersey. We’re well on our way toward that goal thanks to a loyal group of supporters, who tell us that the thousands of manhours devoted to these shows are truly worthwhile. See you at “Annie” in December. Ron Zier, President Wyckoff YMCA Dear Editor: In a recent letter supporting the incumbent candidate in the Wyckoff Republican primary the author said that “environmental conservation” was one of the principles of the Republican Party. Which Republican Party would that be? The Republican Party has done all in its power to weaken the rules that are responsible for cleaning up our air and water since the first legislation was introduced 40 years ago. The Republican Party has not supported environmental conservation at the federal, state, or local level, which is where our appointed boards grant variance after variance, completely ignoring our master plan. The Republican Party has its principles, but environmental conservation certainly isn’t one of them, and writing it doesn’t make it so. Andrea Mateo Wyckoff Dear Editor: The destruction of the Gulf of Mexico because of leaking oil underscores the cost of energy, not only at the gas pump and the light switch, but also when things go wrong and the cleanup is guessed at in the billions. We can do something here by “turning the key to be idle free.” This was a Washington School student’s creative idea to encourage car owners to turn off their engines while parked. There is a payoff in cleaner air for all of us. Mary and Tom Bugel Wyckoff Dear Editor: Over the last few years, the Wyckoff community has demonstrated concern for saving Russell Farm, the Ravine and, most recently, Rambaut Lake. Here is another opportunity to show support for a town treasure that most take for granted: the Zabriskie House. This Federal style home and property overlooks Zabriskie Pond on Franklin Avenue and is on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The Y production a success original home dates back to 1730 and the last addition was made in 1824. The house and its early-American furnishings were willed to the township in 1973 by the late Grace Quackenbush Zabriskie. Unlike the other causes, this only calls for you to come out and enjoy a home and garden tour of nine properties on Wednesday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The committee was very selective, choosing those they knew would be of interest to many who drive by them regularly or are aware of them and think, “Wouldn’t it be interesting to see the inside of that house and walk that garden?” Likewise, the homeowners recognized the need and are graciously welcoming the community that day. Included with the ticket donation price of $35 in advance and $40 that day is a collection of unique cookie recipes, samples of which will be served at a refreshment table that day. The new board of trustees of the Zabriskie House and the Wyckoff Area Garden Club have partnered in this effort and all proceeds from the tour are targeted to preservation efforts of the property. If you have ever taken your children to the Fishing Derby and admired the house, walked the gardens, or visited in December for the annual Open House, you have a sense of how important it is. You can contribute to maintaining this unique piece of history in town by taking the tour on June 16. For tickets, call (201) 891- 9409 or request them while visiting Abma’s Farm. Barbara Douglas, President Wyckoff Area Garden Club Fine float Thank you to all those participants who helped with the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce float. It was a great success. Fifteen hundred bags of candy were handed out. Principles in question Keep us coming to your mailbox... It’s FREE!
