Wyckoff June 2, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Republicans vie in primary; Democrat assures fall race by John Koster On June 8, Wyckoff’s Republican voters will have a choice in that party’s primary as The Reverend Jeffrey Boucher challenges incumbent Wyckoff Mayor Rudy Boonstra. Democratic candidate Henry Velez, MD, who will run uncontested in his party’s primary, has assured a contest in the November general election, when he will face the Republican nominee. One threeyear seat on the Wyckoff Township Committee will be at stake. Boonstra has been a member of Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department Company since 1968. He was elected to the Wyckoff Board of Education in 1973, held every committee chairmanship on that board, and served two terms as board president. He was subsequently elected to the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education, and served in the regional board until 1994. When he was elected to the township committee in 2008, Boonstra left his seat on the Wyckoff Board of Adjustment, where he had served as a member for 19 years, including a dozen years as chairman. Boucher is senior pastor of Powerhouse Christian Church in Wyckoff. He has coached baseball, softball, and football, and currently heads the Wyckoff Junior Football program. He is a member of the Wyckoff Municipal Alliance and the Wyckoff/Midland Park Rotary Club, and is chaplain of the Wyckoff Police Department. He is founder and president of Touch the World Ministries, Inc., a ministry for pre-teens and teenagers. Boucher studied criminal justice and political science at Morris County Community college before entering Northeastern Bible College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biblical literature. He went on to attend both Drew University Graduate School and Alliance Seminary, pursuing his Master of Divinity. He was ordained in 1991. Boucher says he embraces the ideals of the Republican Party, but is an independent thinker who weighs all the facts and always forms his own opinion. He welcomes input from the least senior members of organizations and from opposing factions. He said his experience in non-profit operations would help him to reach out to churches, synagogues, and other groups that could contribute to recreational and social service programs at reduced expenses to the taxpayers. He also urged a call line for people who have financial emergencies and need expert advice on a confidential basis, and a mentoring program in which vital senior residents could assist young families with advice and support. Boucher and his wife, Kristin, have three children: Tyler, Zachary, and Blanca. Velez is a physician who administers a medical board and has lived in Wyckoff since 1989. A graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Velez said that he read a survey showing that 80 percent of Americans who responded said that they believed the United States Congress is dominated by members who represent special interest groups. Congress, he said, was not the township committee, but he felt that Wyckoff needed some new blood and a commitment to represent the entire community.
