Wyckoff is seeking funds for the purchase of Russell Farms – already subsidized by $1.8 million in Bergen County Open Space funds – and to purchase the former Maple Lake site, a basin left behind by a former swimming hole in the Cedar Hill area of the township. Wyckoff Township Committee members tacitly acknowledged that the municipality would have serious competition in trying to obtain that kind of money, but everyone on the governing body and everyone in the audience thought it was a good idea to apply. “Shoot for the moon,” one township committeeman said. Resident Diane Sobin, who ran for township committee twice on a platform that included a greater commitment to seeking outside money, spoke from the audience and strongly supported the township committee’s initiative. Mike Brienza, a contractor and open space advocate, said, “Anything we can do to preserve the open spaces is a step in the right direction.” George Pitts, who regularly attends committee meet- ings, agreed and noted that open space, besides being environmentally and aesthetically important, can help stabilize property taxes. “I love the town, I love you guys, and I love what you’re doing,” said Robert Cortland, another resident. He pointed out that the Maple Lake basin (the lake no longer exists) is the catch basin for the entire Cedar Hill area, and that allowing the site to be targeted for construction or other uses that could render the soil impenetrable could have (continued on page 23) The Wyckoff Township Committee voted last week to amend and simplify an ordinance that requires fencing around swimming pools for the protection of children. The updated ordinance states that pools are permitted. The ordinance states that no floodlights which cast a direct glare outside the property shall be permitted, and that every person who owns a swimming pool more than Swimming pool fence ordinance amended 24 inches deep in any place must install and maintain an adequate enclosure to make the body of water inaccessible to small children. All gates and fences must comply with the standards and requirements of the Uniform Construction Code of the State of New Jersey. J.
