Tips for coping with heat emergency The Midland Park Office of Emergency Management has the following suggests for coping with the extreme summer heat. Residents are encouraged to drink a lot of cool water and avoid alcohol, seek cool places such as the library between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, or visit a mall. Residents are asked to check on neighbors, especially the elderly. The county has four cooling centers open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., including the Northwest Bergen Multipurpose Senior Activity Center at 4650 Center Street in Midland Park and the County Administration Building Cafeteria, located on the first floor of One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack. Summer library programs begin Registration for the Midland Park Memorial Library’s summer reading program takes place in the children’s room. Children can join “Set Sail for Your Library!” and explore different ports of call as they read their way around the children’s room. Children may also attend Monday at the Movies at 2 p.m. Toddler Story Time will be held on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. 6, and Preschool Story Time will be at 2 p.m. on Thursdays. His parents sent him to the Hotchkiss School, though he was not happy there, and completed his secondary education at the Riverdale Country School in the Bronx. He attended Harvard University, from which he graduated during the depths of the Great Depression. A reception for “Varian Fry, Assignment: Rescue, 1940-1941” will be held Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. Dr. Mordecai Paldiel, former director of Yad Vashem’s Department of the Righteous, will give a speech about Fry’s humanitarian mission in France at 7 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. Several additional programs have been scheduled in conjunction with the exhibition. On Monday, Sept. 27 at 7:15 p.m., Rosemary Sullivan, professor of English at University of Toronto and Fellow, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, will present “Lives on the Line: Varian Fry and the Artists He Saved at the Villa Air-Bel.” On Monday, Oct. 4 at 7:15 p.m., Sheila Isenberg, author and professor of English at Marist College, will present “The Intellectual as Hero: Varian Fry and his Feat of Rescue.” For more information, call Dr. Michael A.
