Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • July 21, 2010 Franklin Lakes Residents express interest in school board seat by Frank J. McMahon Eight borough residents have expressed interest in being appointed to the vacant seat on the Franklin Lakes Board of Education that must be filled by Aug. 18. The board planned to start interviewing the applicants this week. The residents seeking the appointment are: Lynne Goldman, who lives in the Colonial Road School area; Joseph Kelly, who lives in the High Mountain Road school area; Laurence Loprete, who lives in the Colonial Road School area; James Martino, who lives in the Woodside Avenue school area; Susan McGowan, who lives in the High Mountain Road School area; Tal Millet, who lives in the Colonial Road School area; Craig Urciuoli, who lives in the Colonial Road School area; and David Wertheimer, who lives in the Woodside Avenue School area. The appointment will be for the current school year. The successful applicant will have to seek election to the seat in the next school board election in April 2011. The vacancy on the board was created when former trustee Gabrielle Gutierrez resigned on June 15 for personal reasons after having been elected in an uncontested school board election on April 20. She served on the board’s Personnel and Policy committees, but resigned after voting against the implementation of a revised math curriculum for the school district, which was approved 7-1 at the June 1 school board meeting. Former Superintendent Roger Bayersdorfer, who retired from the school district on June 30, advised the school board at its final meeting before his retirement that these applicants had responded to the board’s call for expressions of interest in joining the board by a June 30 deadline. “It’s wonderful that they stepped up to fill this vacancy,” Bayersdorfer said, adding that he has encouraged all of them to consider seeking a seat on the board in the annual school board elections. The interview process is expected to require more than one special meeting of the board, but Michael Solokas, the school district’s business administrator, advised that the board plans to vote on the appointment of the new member at its Aug. 3 meeting. The current 2010-11 members of the K-8 school district board of education include: Board President Kathie Schwartz, who was elected in 2008 and has three children in attending the Woodside Avenue School; vice president Carolyn Reitz, who was elected in 2005 and has one child attending the High Mountain Road School and one child attending Indian Hills High school; Margaret Bennett, who was elected in 2009 and has three children attending the Woodside Avenue School; Barbara Capozzi, who was elected in 2008 and has two children attending the Woodside Avenue School; Christine Christopoul, who was elected in 2010 and has two children attending the Woodside Avenue School and one attending the Franklin Avenue Middle School; Joseph Conti, who was elected to the board in 1997 and has one child attending the Franklin Ave Middle School and one child who is a Ramapo High School graduate; Richard Koenigsberg, who was elected to the board in 2003, has one child attending the Colonial Road School, one child attending FAMS, and one child attending the Indian Hills High School; and Lisa Sciancalepore, who was appointed to the board in 2007 and elected in 2008 and has one child attending the Franklin Ave Middle School and one attending the Indian Hills High School. Borough Police Department Report On July 12, a Valley View Drive resident reported that unknown persons had made a fraudulent transaction with her credit card account. Detective Anthony Pacelli investigated. Also on July 12, a Steves Lane resident reported that between 2:30 and 5:30 a.m. unknown persons entered his unlocked car, which was parked in the driveway. The garage door opener was then used to enter the garage and ultimately the residence where two laptop computers, car keys, and cash were taken. The keys were used to take the resident’s 2010 Honda Passport from the driveway. Lieutenant John Bakelaar, Lieutenant Donald Osenbruck, and Officers Gerard Gansel, Denny Knubel, and Jon Rynander investigated. The same day, a Smoke Hollow Trail resident reported that between 1 and 6:30 a.m. unknown persons had entered a pickup truck parked in her driveway. The persons then entered the residence via an unlocked rear window. Two laptop computers were taken from the residence. Lt. Bakelaar, Lt. Osenbruck, and Officers Knubel and Rynander investigated. The police department reminds residents to lock vehicles that are parked in driveways. In addition, windows located on the ground floor of a residence should be closed and locked during the overnight and when the home is vacant. After receiving a report of an open fire near Indian Trail Drive on July 11, officers discovered that under-age consumption of alcohol was occurring at a residence on that street. A 63-yea-old borough woman was charged with maintaining a nuisance and making property available for underage consumption of alcoholic beverages. Officers Donald Wilson and Gerard Gansel investigated.
