Master plan update approved; sidewalk dining eyed
by John Koster The Wyckoff Planning Board voted unanimously to accept the updated Wyckoff Master Plan last week as the Wyckoff Township Committee forwarded a draft of an ordinance to permit sidewalk dining for planning board review. The Wyckoff Township Committee would have to enact the sidewalk dining permission as an ordinance. At present, Wyckoff does not permit sidewalk dining. After considerable resistance from some residents, Ridgewood allowed sidewalk dining some years ago. The bistro culture helped to revitalize what was until then an economically troubled business district. At one point, restaurants proliferated in Ridgewood to such an extent that some residents urged that new restaurants, along with banks and nail salons, be discouraged because they were impacting too heavily on other retail establishments. The future of Wyckoff may also include a pedestrian path between the Boulder Run shopping center, anchored by a Stop & Shop supermarket, and the former A&P shopping complex just uphill from Boulder Run, where the Inserra Corporation has introduced revised plans for a new ShopRite supermarket. The Wyckoff Master Plan can suggest, but cannot mandate, changes within Wyckoff. All zoning changes must be made by the introduction and adoption of zoning ordinances by the Wyckoff Township Committee at public meetings. The formal plan by Michael Kauker of Wyckoff was discussed and revised at four public meetings by an ad hoc committee of members of township boards and individual citizens with an interest in planning and in the environment. Objectives in the Wyckoff Master Plan are to main-
tain the small-town feel of Wyckoff and to promote the central business district, which is the result of a gradual implementation of a sector plan to maintain the external appearance of houses being turned into offices and retail stores, with landscaped parking adjacent to the stores. As part of the report, planners noted a decrease in the percentage of the population between the ages of 60 to 64 and an increase in both younger children and the elderly. The township was urged to continue to encourage housing opportunities so older residents may remain in the community when they no longer wish to maintain individual residences.
Health officials: Lyme disease on increase
Reported cases of Lyme disease in Wyckoff have now exceeded those from all previous years. According to Dorothy Voorman-Fish, M.S.,R.N., president of the Wyckoff Board of Health, the increase in the local deer population and lack of public awareness are serious sources of concern. Board of health member David Klopp, V.M.D., pointed out that Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tickborne illness disease among humans and is just as (continued on page 10)
